Pablo thinks Hawaii is way over-rated by the AVCA, which one can understand; but Pablo also thinks Minnesota is way under-rated by the AVCA, which is more difficult to understand. Why would a traditionally strong volleyball program be so under-rated by the AVCA??

Because they have a batch of losses to lesser teams, suffered while two players -- both seniors and the two primary passers on the team -- were under NCAA suspension. They're at full strength now and they're going to be good. (There are several older threads devoted to this issue/controversy. Check around the end of August, beginning of September to see them).

I can answer that.
They started with a ranking based on the end of 2005, a ranking that was skewed by the fact Minnesota was cheated out of a top 16 seed in the interest of "balancing" the seeds geographically. They then go to Knoxville and almost knock off a final four team, losing 3-2 (after being up 2-1 and well ahead in game 4). Their punishment? They are dropped to the 20s in the final ranking.
They open 2006 at #22. (Keep in mind, they were 3rd in the Big10 and #17 heading into the NCAAs.
OK, so that wasn't particularly fair.
They then lose to LSU and TAMU in the season's first tournament (another topic) and drop out of the top 25.

Yes, that seems to be reason. The AVCA started Minnesota way too low. If they had started as high as Hawaii, they certainly wouldn't have dropped as far as they are, even with their losses. Minnesota certainly should've, could've, won that match at Tennessee. Ah, what might've been.

Not the same thing at all, but both have nautical meanings.

They'll only be shipped out if they can guarantee they'll come back winners. They do NOT want Hawaii out of their own regional.
It's a sort of justice, right? This year, Hawaii could catch a break...

But IF Hawaii is truly only #45 as Pablo thinks, then anywhere they get sent will be a risk; after all there's only 64 teams in the NCAA tournament. What's the probability of them being sent someplace with all 3 other teams below #45??

The Wahine have lost two starters for the season with injuries. Kamana'o has been playing with pain since the season started. I don't think Mason or Sanders is playing at 100 percent either. Hawai'i has definitely not caught a break this season. I can see Wahine fans making a statement by not attending the Regional at the SSC if the Wahine get snubbed yet again (provided they earn a seed). There's a lot of season left to be played so we'll see how it turns out.

What's the probability of them being sent someplace with all 3 other crews below #45?? Matches are played on the court, not on P-Dub's computer. I appreciate the effort P-Dub puts into his system but much like weather forecasts, it's not accurate all the time.

And keep in mind that Pablo is capable of making big changes week to week (i.e.Connecticut Huskies), unlike the AVCA (not to say this will necessarily happen, given Hawaii's conference schedule). All ye can do is ask the women to go out there and play to the best of their ability and the chips will fall where they may. And they will and they will.

What's the probability of them being sent someplace with all 3 other crews below #45?? That probability is zero. There are 16 sub-regionals, and each one gets one of the top 16 seeds. The best way to ensure a spot in a regional is to be playing well enough to be in the top 16 that first weekend of the tournament. And/or be playing well enough late in the season to be one of those seeded teams.

Hawai'i has definitely not caught a break this season. Caught a break in the NCAA brackets -- i.e., some home matches they weren't expecting. That being said, there's no reason to believe they won't still have a top 16 seed when all is said and done. Not unless NMS and at least one other squad in the WAC knocks them off.

Minnesota and their fans should be thankful they are not in the rankings going into Big Ten play. Being high in the rankings places a different kind of pressure on a team. Believe be, Minnesota will be in the top 15 in two weeks.
