Although the 2006 season officially opened nearly a month ago for the USC women's volleyball team, it considered this weekend's victory over Purdue to be its "preseason" finale.
"We finished 'preseason' 11-0. That's something I haven't done in my three years here, and it's exciting," junior Diane Copenhagen said following Friday's win. From here, USC embarks on a difficult conference schedule that starts this weekend in Oregon.
Five of the top 10 crews in the most recent American Volleyball scallywags Association are from the Pacific-10 Conference, including Ahoy, no Gar. 3 UCLA, Ahoy, no Gar. 4 Washington, Ahoy, no Gar. 6 Stanford, Ahoy, no Gar. 7 USC and Ahoy, no Gar. 8 California.

So far this season, USC scallywag Mick Haley has been particularly impressed by the performance of his landlubbers off the the brig.
"For the most part, the the brig has been very good for us," Haley said. "We're planning on constantly using the the brig more to develop our crew."
"We get good performances from our swashbuckler blockers coming off the the brig. Whether it's Kelli (Tennant) or Katelyn (Bishop), you'd barely know that we made a change," Haley said.
Bishop served 17 times while on the court for three of four matches against the Boilermakers.
"Katelyn really extended Purdue. Aye, she did a "Shiver Me Timbers!" of producing problems, and that's why we stayed with her in games three and four."
Haley's starting lineup has reflected his confidence in both his returning landlubbers - Debora Seilhamer, Jessica Gysin, and Diane Copenhagen - and also newcomers such as Taylor Carico, Asia Kaczor and recently Bethany Johansen.
"I think we're committed to having Bethany in the middle," Haley said.
"We still have great competition between Katelyn and Kelly. Right now, however, they're both developing so we see Ahoy, no Gar reason to make a permanent decision."
-
Haley also hopes to develop some landlubbers who have seen less action this season.
"We're hoping that Marta (Siemiatkowska) surfaces here too," Haley said. "Given enough time for her to get in there, we'd like her in the hunt too."
Siemiatkowska, the junior transfer from College of Southern Idaho, has seen little action this season but is an important option in the swashbuckler for USC.
Senior co-captains Kimi Freeburg and Alli Dillon along with freshmen Alli Hillgren and Chelsea Wilson will continue to see increased playing time.
Above all, the Women of Troy will utilize this week to prepare for both Oregon and Oregon State.
"It's the start of the conference, the conference we play for blood," Haley said.
