Much talent around area nets
Girls volleyball: Los Al, Wilson, Poly, Lakewood strong.

The CIF Southern Section is a gold mine for NCAA Division I volleyball recruiters.
And Los Alamitos, Wilson, Lakewood and Poly highs are the big four programs in the area that are saturated with U.S. High Performance players who compete on junior, youth and select teams at international and national events. And there are some who are among the rising players on the AAU Junior National beach circuit as well.
And some of the talent is scattered at programs like St. Joseph, Valley Christian, Downey, Millikan, Mayfair, La Mirada, Bellflower, San Pedro and Carson.
Los Alamitos is currently ranked No. 25 in the PrepVolleyball.com national preseason poll and No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA. The Bruins (No. 4 Div. I-AA), Lancers (No. 8 Div. I-AA) and Jackrabbits are also among the top teams in Southern California.
Last week at the Gahr Classic, those who follow the game got an small sample of what can be expected this season.
Redondo, also a highly ranked team by PrepVolleyball.com and CIF-SS Division I-AA (No. 21 and 6, respectively), disposed of Los Alamitos in four games.
Lakewood thoroughly beat a good but battered Flintridge-Sacred Heart team (ranked No. 5 in Division I-A) in three games to take third place.
The young Jackrabbits held two-game leads over Flintridge and Notre Dame Academy but couldn't close the deal.
It's a good thing there's still plenty of volleyball to play.
This will give new coaches like Ryan Miller of Millikan, Mike Hinton of St. Joseph and Robbie Orantes of Valley Christian - who will share duties with Kim Holliday - some time to try to close the gap in their programs with the elite teams.
The short list of best of the senior class includes: Los Al's Geena Urango (USC recruit), Michelle Horio, Riley Cropper (UC Irvine) and Bethany Keisner (California), Poly's Danielle Moskitis (Boston College), Downey's Erin Saddler (Cal State Fullerton), St. Joseph's Dana Vargas (UC Santa Barbara) and Wilson's Elise Hendrickson (Arizona) and Genie Francisco (Cal State Fullerton).
