You guys that were there, what was the ref saying to courtney when they were talking for a minute or two? Was UW chatting it up a bit? Cause they really looked fired up in the first two games, I was wondering if the team was talking a bit or something across the net... I've never seen a ref give a warning about trash talking across the net.

I think Cal players complained about UW players screening their serves. The ref talked to Court about that. My impressions of the game: Washington played steadily and reduced their hitting and service errors. Their passing game was improved compared to the previous matches that I saw. Stevie had a great game and was able to tool Cal block attempts; she wasn't doing that in the Texas match. Janine finally was able to adjust to the Washington game and hit Court's sets. Christal did well, I think, but I expect her to. The middles were quite efficient. Court is Court. Tama and Ashley are coming along; it's hard to always be compared to Candace and Danka. Cal looked nervous today (except for Angie).

Another thing I just thought of: I was very impressed with Cal's libero, Jillian Davis, especially in the first two games. She was everywhere and had some great digs. She kept them in rallies and kept the game much closer than the rest of the Cal team deserved. I know, losing the games at 17 and 16 is not exactly "close" but it would have been sub 10 without the way Davis played.
Officially she only had 12 digs. I am not sure what game the scorekeeper was watching, as it seemed to me that she had 12 digs in each game, not for the match.

It looked as if there might have been a recurit sitting behind the huskie bench with her mom

I've never seen a ref give a warning about trash talking across the net. No, it wasn't for trash talking. When UW was serving, all the Husky players (and I mean ALL the Husky players) would yell out who's front row hitters for the other team and what blocking assignments to watch out for. They were loud enough for the audience to hear, and I don't even know how they could hear each other, since they were all yelling and talking at the same time. It was kinda funny. I'm pretty sure, the ref told the Huskies not to talk so loudly before we served.

if you go to gohuskies.com(hit the '2' on the moving ticker deal) there are interviews with courtney and mussie. courtney was interviewed by carolyn farney, ex-player, and you could tell they were having trouble not laughing. pretty funny.

I thought I heard Sonja say she was back in school.
The only thing I could guess about the ref/Courtney interlude was that Jimmy Mac was really close to the sideline at the end of the previous point. There were also pretty well bunched during serves, so the screen warning is another probable theory.
Agree with other posters: Pressey was great to watch and Cutura has promise, but is nowhere near ready for prime time.

I have to say, thanks for all the updates here. I couldn't go, watch, or even check the score until it was all over and done, but when I did see it I just said "Wow. Even last year's team never swept Cal." So I wanted to find out what the story was -- and I got a pretty good idea of it from this thread.
I'm sad to hear that so much of it was about Cal having troubles though.
The stats look a lot like numbers from last year's matches. High hitting percentages for the middles, even if they didn't get that many attacks. Very few errors, and from the sound of things some very effective serving.
I sure hope they can play at the same level tomorrow night, because I'm going to be there!
