Aggies Record a Sweep in WAC Opener

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The No. 24 New Mexico State volleyball team (15-0, 1-0) won its WAC opener in three games over Idaho, Thursday, Sept. 21. A crowd of 2,103 saw the Aggies dominate the Vandals, 30-20, 30-21, 30-17, at Las Cruces High school.
Juniors outside hitter Anna Callis and middle hitter Kim Oguh both had a match-high 10 kills while senior outside hitters Tanya Allen and Alice Borden added nine kills. As a team, New Mexico State had a .435 hitting percentage with senior setter Jackie Choi supplying 37 assists.
Head coach Mike Jordan said he was pleased with the Aggies, who out served the Vandals 7-1.
“We played pretty well,” he said. “We did a lot of good things. Offensively, we were very good and we were solid from the service line. Tanya Allen was really good. Kim Oguh and Anna Callis were exceptional.”
Defensively, the Aggies recorded eight blocks while Idaho only tallied one. Sophomore middle hitter Amber Simpson had six blocks and Callis contributed four. Sophomore defensive specialists Krystal Torres led all players with 11 digs.
New Mexico State controlled the match from the first serve. The Aggies opened the game one with a 9-2 run, which was fueled by Borden, Callis and Oguh kills. Torres helped seal the game with a late 8-0 run.
The Aggies continued to rule games two and three. New Mexico State raced out to a 10-3 lead in game two and finished the match strong when the Aggies posted their largest margin of defeat.
New Mexico State continues conference play when the Aggies host Boise State, Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Las Cruces High School.
I'm pretty impressed with the attendance for a high school!!
