49ers stung by the Hornets 3-0 loss is first to Sacramento State.
What is expected to be a tough couple of weeks for No. 25-ranked Long Beach State got off to an ominous start Thursday night with a 3-0 setback at Sacramento State. The Hornets (13-4), who lost a five-game affair last year at LBSU, completely turned the tables this year with their 30-24, 30-25, 30-27 victory - the program's first over the 49ers (8-3).
Quincy Verdin led LBSU with 10 kills in the losing effort. Alexis Crimes and Mariko Crum both added seven kills, Iris Murray had a match-high 21 digs, and Nicole Vargas recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 32 assists and 16 digs.
The 49ers committed 27 attack errors and hit just .088 for the match.
Atlee Hubbard led the Hornets with 18 kills.
Sacramento State hit just .205 for the match, but patrolled the net with a decisive 19-9 advantage in blocks.
LBSU travels to UC Davis for Saturday night's match before returning home to open Big West Conference play.
In the opening week, the 49ers face UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly SLO.
