CSUN 4-2 BYU 3-1 LBSU 1-3 Penn 3-1 UH 2-3
Statistically BYU and Penn have the best 5 game records. CSUN has been in more 5 game matches though. It is pretty hard to tell though who is in better condition. Very tough to tell. I don't know how you're going to get an accurate read on that to be honest with you. Make em play to 7 games instead of 5? I don't know.

I don't think 5 game matches have to do with conditioning. You could have the best conditioned team, but if they are young and inexperienced (or unconfident), they will lose 5 game matches or may not even get to 5 games.

I think conditioning definitely factors into the 5-game match win-lose record. But there are certainly other factors as well. I don't think you can judge whether a team is well-conditioned based solely on their 5-game match record (although it can help a bit.) You can also look at their play in back to back matches, especially back to back against tough teams. Hawaii and BYU have to do that frequently. They will see Long Beach State twice in the span of three days whereas a team like Pepperdine can play Long Beach on Wed and UCSC on Friday.
5-game matches can also be influenced by mental toughness, maturity, desire and the balance of the players on the team.

IMO Conditioning is work. The more work you put into it...the more conditioned you are. (assuming intelligence)
The trainers at PSU are noted for the love/hate respect of the players. Compare what they put players thru to any other program... I bet they dehydrate more players than all the other programs combined.

I nominate UCI
They have played eight 5 gamers. At least two of the four gamers could have been five gamers, except they probably ran out of gas due to their lack of depth and the need to keep in key players.
Smith and Weichert are the two middles that have played all year with essentially no backups. Pelzel and Ford 'never' come out. The only routine subs have been the outside hitter shuffle, which has settled from 3-4 players rotating to basically 2 at this point of the season. Reid was getting 80% of the setting reps thru the first 1/3rd of the season, it has been his job since, especially since Thornton is out for the year. A recent check of the MPSF setting stats showed Reid had set more games than any other setter.
They generally start 3 freshman every match.
They are 4-4 in their 5 gamers.
C'mon...somebody support this. Its been a tough year for the 'Eaters!!

In five game matches it will usually come down to who is tougher - mentality, physicialy, and emotionally - If you loss the toughness in 1 of those 3 areas you are going to fail - For example when you make a mistake and hold your head down; it projects the image of lack of confidence; you start doubting yourself - you need to project confidence at every point; and esp in Game 5.
Game 5 is not just about physical conditioning, it is about emotional and mental condition.
