Marv Dunphy Tabbed AVCA National Coach of the Year
Award is first in Dunphy's 22-year career.
June 1, 2005
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), in conjunction with Tachikara USA, Inc., is pleased to announce that Pepperdine University Head Men's Volleyball Coach Marv Dunphy has been selected the 2005 Tachikara/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Coach of the Year. It marks the first time Dunphy or Pepperdine has been honored with the national award.
Dunphy, in his 22 season at the helm of the Waves, guided Pepperdine to a 25-2 record and the 2005 NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship title by beating UCLA in five games on May 7. The Waves, who won their fifth national men's volleyball title, held the top spot in the USA Today/CSTV Top 15 Division I-II Men's Coaches Poll for seven weeks during the 2005 season, and never fell below third in the poll. Pepperdine captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season title with a 20-2 record and earned the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by defeating Long Beach State in three games in the MPSF Tournament championship match. The Waves completed the 2005 season with a 20-2 record against teams ranked in the final USA Today/CSTV Top 15 Division I-II Men's Coaches Poll, including a 5-2 mark against top-five teams.
Pepperdine placed two members on the AVCA All-America Division I-II First Team and an additional member on the second team. Waves senior outside hitter Sean Rooney earned the AVCA Division I-II National Player of the Year, while freshman setter Jonathan Winder ran the offense to a .360 attack percentage this year and was awarded the AVCA Division I-II Newcomer of the Year.
Dunphy, the MPSF Coach of the Year, collected his 400th-collegiate victory in 2005 and now has a 409-162 record in 22 seasons at Pepperdine. The Waves won 92.6 percent of their matches in 2005, which ties Dunphy's best winning percentage at Pepperdine (also was 25-2 in 1985). Pepperdine, which failed to make the NCAA Tournament in 2004, improved this season by six victories and seven fewer losses.
Dunphy is well-recognized in the international game as well. He took a leave-of-absence from Pepperdine following the 1985 season to serve as head coach of the USA Men's National Team that won gold at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. During a three-year span under Dunphy's direction, the USA Men's National Team compiled an impressive 197-31 record and won nearly every major tournament. He returned to the international scene after the Waves' 1999 season as he took a 17-month sabbatical to serve as an assistant coach on the men's national team for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. He worked as a team consultant for the men's national team for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
Dunphy, a 1994 Volleyball Hall of Fame inductee, played middle blocker at Pepperdine during its formative years at the intercollegiate level. He earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Pepperdine in 1974.
Tachikara will formally present the AVCA Division I-II Men's National Coach of the Year award in San Antonio at the Tachikara/AVCA Coach of the Year and Victory Club Awards Banquet on Thursday, Dec. 15. The brunch is held in conjunction with the 2005 AVCA Annual Convention. Tachikara can be found on the world wide web at www.tachikara.com.
