STOCKTON - Women's volleyball coach Charlie Wade came to Pacific to work his magic, and his first trick is making the Tigers' 2-9 record disappear before they play their Big West Conference opener against Cal State Fullerton at 7 tonight at Spanos Center.
"We're just entering the conference portion of our schedule, and everybody is 0-0 in the conference standings," said Wade, a 1981 Cal State Fullerton graduate. "We didn't have the nonconference record we wanted, but now we get an opportunity to start over."
Pacific's streak of 24 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances ended last season, and an immediate resurgence in Wade's first year would require a remarkable run through the Big West. With 19 matches remaining in the regular season - 14 in the Big West, two against UC Davis and three in the Community Bankers Classic - the Tigers must go at least 13-6 to finish with the .500 record required for an at-large bid.

"It's never too late," Cal State Fullerton coach Carolyn Zimmerman said. "They still have plenty of matches left, but I would think the new coach is really focused on just trying to play better volleyball."
Wade believes that is beginning to happen. Pacific started the season with nine consecutive road matches and lost All-Big West outside hitter Kara Uhl along the way, but Wade hopes that grueling stretch helped his team prepare for conference play.
"I feel we've gotten better every week," Wade said. "We'll find out very quickly if that's enough to help us beat teams in the Big West because that part of the schedule is upon is."
Cal State Fullerton (11-1) is off to the best start in program history.
The Titans have won a school-record six consecutive matches and need four more victories to clinch their third winning season in 31 years. The Titans were picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches poll behind No. 25 Long Beach State, No. 21 Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and Pacific.
Long Beach State (8-2) is seeking its second consecutive Big West title after sharing the championship with UC Santa Barbara in 2005. Big West Freshman of the Year Ali Daley transferred to UCLA, but junior middle blocker Alexis Crimes returns after earning first-team All-Big West and honorable mention All-America honors last season.
Cal Poly (7-4) improved dramatically under first-year coach Jon Stevenson last season, finishing third in conference after going 3-15 to finish seventh in 2004. The Mustangs, who upset then No. 12 Hawaii before a crowd of 6,155 in Honolulu last week, are vying for their first Big West title since 1984.
"Cal Poly is clearly the favorite right now," UC Santa Barbara coach Kathy Gregory said. "They've earned it."
UC Santa Barbara (5-5) is unranked but receiving votes in the CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25.The Gauchos have won at least a share of four consecutive conference titles. They are one of three teams that have participated in all 25 NCAA tournaments.

STOCKTON - There have been many proud moments in the history of the women's volleyball program at Pacific, but this was not one of them.
The Tigers fell in four games to Cal State Fullerton in their Big West Conference opener on Thursday before a crowd of 816 at Spanos Center, the first time the Titans have won on Pacific's home court.
"That's unfortunate, but we can play better," Pacific freshman Valerie Sourbeer said. "Next time we seem them, we're going to be a different team."

The Titans came in 2-42 all-time against Pacific and 0-21 at Spanos Center, but they extended the best start in program history and ended their 21-year drought in Stockton with a 30-25, 28-30, 30-24, 30-26 victory.
"It was really exciting," Cal State Fullerton setter Julie Geissert said. "We were really intense because we knew we could do it this year."
Geissert had 61 assists, and senior outside hitter Breanna Trudeau had 19 kills to lead four players in double figures for the Titans (12-1, 1-0 Big West). Sophomore Brittany Moore and senior Danielle Hitzeman each had 16 kills, and the Titans hit .274 with 20 errors on 190 total attacks.
"Going to our middles obviously worked well," Cal State Fullerton coach Carolyn Zimmerman said. "It's not easy to play on the road, so we just attempted to play our game as best we could."
The Tigers were left with two walk-on setters after freshman Dancyne Kama twisted her left ankle during pre-game warm-ups. Kama was carried off the floor and returned on crutches with her ankle heavily bandaged.
Pacific sophomore outside hitter Alexa Anderson had 17 kills. Sourbeer, junior Johanna Hilbers and senior Jennifer Knox had nine apiece for the Tigers (2-10, 0-1), who committed 26 attack errors and hit just .184.
"Your team hitting percentage is one of the most telling statistics," Pacific coach Charlie Wade said. "If you hit .300, you're going to win a high percentage of your matches."
The Tigers met behind close doors for more than 30 minutes following the match. Wade described the meeting as "productive."
"People got to voice their views and observations on what we need to work on," Wade said. "Hopefully, we'll be able to implement things that will make us better."

(i can see how awful it feels for some Pacific players, to lose to schools that Pacific would easily defeat year after year, i'm sure some former UOP players can relate when UCI and CSUN started to defeat them...hopefully SOURBEER will back up what she said and that UOP will defeat CSF in Fullerton)

STOCKTON - Women's volleyball coach Charlie Wade could have one less setter in uniform and one less setter on the floor when Pacific plays UC Riverside in a Big West Conference contest at 7 p.m. today at Spanos Center.
Starting setter Dancyne Kama is doubtful for tonight's match after injuring her left ankle Thursday during pre-game warm-ups. X-rays taken Friday morning were negative. Kama, a freshman, had an MRI scheduled Friday afternoon.
Kama's absence leaves the Tigers with two walk-on freshmen, Olivia Riley and Carly Hiromoto, at a critical position.

"Dancyne was our starting setter, and she was doing a nice job for us," Wade said. "Now it looks like she's going to be out a little while, so now you go to the next kid, and they get their chance."
Wade scrambled to find setters during the offseason after 2005 starter Allison Ianni transferred to Michigan State and backup Nikki Jagd transferred to UCLA. Ianni ranks fifth in the nation with 13.81 assists per game for the Spartans.
Wade identified Riley as tonight's probable starter and indicated he might switch back to a 5-1 formation after using two setters in matches against Cal, Yale, Montreal and Cal State Fullerton.
Wade also said junior outside hitter Johanna Hilbers could receive increased playing time.
"She seems to be one of our best players, so we're trying to find ways to keep her on the court longer," Wade said.
The Tigers (2-10, 0-1 Big West) are coming off a four-game loss to Cal State Fullerton. They are trying to avoid their first 0-2 start in conference since 1995.
UC Riverside (1-11, 0-1) is 0-10 all-time against Pacific dating back to 2001.
