I was just thinking... if I wanted to be a coach, and enter college coaching, what would I find to be the most rewarding. So I thought, well, what would be the most difficult situation to be in?
I'm not sure all of these present their own problems and rewards.

Nice post
I would say take over a program from a successful coach that moved to another program. Nothing like replacing a legend.
I've been involved with two different college programs, one with outstanding funding and one with barely any....the one with little funding (i.e. little support) was interesting because there was almost no pressure to win....finish .500 and you keep your job forever...we won 27 matches one year (DIII) and beat NO ONE but the AD didn't know the difference, so our staff was "successful"....
the well funded program (higher level), it is not good enough to just make the 2nd round of the NCAA's....you have to be Top 25 to not feel real pressure....
I think taking over a losing program depends on the location....if the program is located in the middle of nowhere in the volleyball world, they are probably losing for a reason....thats probably the worst situation...
if you take over a program in a volleyball area but has been losing, you probably have chance.....thats probably the best situation....you have time to build and have access to resources....
and of course taking over a program that was led by a miserable/meanspirted coach BUT great recruiter is the best situation.....

Back in the day when I weighed over 200 lbs, I made a great couch.

I'm going to be a "new" coach someday so, you can imagine my surprise when this Bible of a thread for young newbie coaches lands on my lap. I'll be taking copious notes so please, post away.

The _most_ difficult? Heck, use your imagination.
How about the entire team turns out to be squirrels?

I voted other:
Preventing (R(uffda! from spying on (ie, "scouting") your team by always showing up to your practices.

Wait a second. Three-legged squirrels. That'd be even tougher.
IMHO.
