in three games. I was very, very surprised with how easy Santa Clara dismantled Pepperdine. Granted, I've always thought Pepperdine was always overrated, but given how many injuries the Broncos have gone through the past few weeks, I thought that the Waves would either win it or SCU would win in five.
The first thing you notice is that Lindsy Evans isn't a bad setter - I think that once she trains full-time as a setter, she'll be really effective. Santa Clara passed pretty well and she was able to get the ball to the hitters, though she made a lot of ball-handling errors. She made at least five in the first game alone, it seemed. However, the more reps she gets, the less mistakes she'll make. She was also an effective attacker on the second contact and she puts up a nice block. I would liken her to a poor man's version of Ashley Engle - not as much power on her attacks, isn't as athletic, but in the same mold being a 6-3 hitter converted into a setter. I think she'll be very good at Santa Clara for years to come.
Anna Cmaylo was unstoppable. She is one of the best offensive middles in the country and the fact that Crystal Matich was out did not matter. Evans found a way to connect with Cmaylo on most occasions and it usually went down for a kill. She has blossomed so much over hte past year and you know she has the confidence to get a kill on every swing. Wallace also played a combination of Nina Sevastopoulos (front) and Taylor O'Brien (back) and it worked like perfection. Brittany Lowe slid over to the right side and her versatility paid off, allowing the freshman to bang away at the net. It was a good coaching move for the staff and hopefully it'll pay off in the future, at least until Matich comes back and Evans can slide back into the opposite position.
Caroline Walters also played very, very well. She dug a lot of hard-hit balls and popped them up for Evans. The Broncos still have some work to do, but I came away very impressed with them team, considering they lost two starters in the past two weeks.
After the game, the 2005 players were all honored, with the athletic director giving each player a Final Four ring.
