Even though hot, sweaty & uncomfortable Crawford Gym (gym? I've seen better high school gyms with more seating), UCI swept Hawaii tonight in three. It was the first time I saw either team play this year, and despite the scores, it was a pretty good match.
UCI ("The Mighty Mutts") aren't that tall, but they are a balanced team and cover each other well. The kills were pretty even between Pelzel, Marchewka, Vislay, Bemus, and Tucker got in his licks.
Hawaii played a little down tonight, but I pity their next victim...Long Beach. Hawaii will sweep Long Beach on Wednesday and Friday. Later, volleyball fans.

i totally agree with VBcruisin. hawaii is MAD and tyler hildebrand better watch his cute butt, because here come the warriors! hawaii was not playing well at all. the first game was terrible, but to give them credit, UCI played awesome.
how many times did they roof costas? man, that just DOES NOT happen! and UCI is a small team, but very scrappy.

Costas hit negative. I don't think I've ever seen that happen before.
Hawaii's middles weren't much good either, they've got 6 inches or more on the UCI middles, but played like it was the other way around. Thomas did good offensively, but the position is middle BLOCKER.
Outblocked 15-5.
And kimo wasn't particularly good. What the hell is that crap on his head anyway. Please tell me he lost a bet, I refuse to believe someone purposely made their hair like that.

Looking at the boxscore, can't believe Costas hit -100, with 7 kills, 9 errors, out of 20 swings. I see Pedro played just one game and had 4 kills, 1 error, out of 7 swings and hitting at .429. Did Pedro come in for Costas? The boxscore www.mvball.uci.edu/Boxscores/2003/UCIMVB12.HTM

Actually, Costas went out in the final points of the third game. Pedro Azenha substituted for Zimet at the end of 2nd game and played the third.
I like Azenha, becuase he plays with a lot of emotion. He gets fired up, has a great jump serve and is a smart player. If it wasn't for upper classmen Costas, Ching or Zimet, I bet he would be starting. I haven't seen too many freshman this year as impressive as he is, even though he is not getting a lot of plat time.
As far as Costas is concerned...I was being nice in not reporting that he "sucked" big time tonight.

Where did Bemus and Tucker come form? What club and/or High schools?Never heard of either of them.
Saw both UH matches this weekend and both are excellent OHs.

Thomas did good offensively, but the position is middle BLOCKER. i'm just repeating what my volleyball friend has told me, so i might be wrong, but the middle blocker position doesn't necessarily mean the best blocker on the team, though it usually does. she said that it just means it's the blocker in the middle of a triple block or the blocker closest to the center of the net in a double block. so it's just the person who's tallest? someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

Serving and passing is the name of the Game. UCI had it and Hawaii didn't. However, I'll take a "split on the road" at this point. Again, Pelzel was unstoppable. Jimmy you're playing great. Costas will be back. Like I said, playing at Crawford is at least a 3 point advantage per game for the Ants (no longer the Ain'ts). The crowd was 70% UCI 30% Hawaii. Not as electric as the Bren Center. What happened to all the CIA fans from Friday. Coach Speraw move all your games to the Bren Center (plus they sell beer there - a more festive atmosphere) your fans will come out. VBCrusin thanks for all your color comentary during the game. I think we should replace Marlow and Cox. Long Beach State watch out the Hawaiians are pissed. Bookumdanoaloha.

Hey Bookum,
I really enjoyed sitting with you and the great Hawaii fans to watch the match at the Crawford "sweatbox." It's always a pleasure talking volleyball with someone who is knowledgable...AND someone who is not blinded by team loyalty to appreciate other players around the league.
It was UCI's night tonight (sorry, but I predicted that Hawaii would split with UCI on this trip). Costas had an off night, but I feel that UCI was ready for him...and Ching. Hawaii had too many errors, and they never gave up. The Volleyball Gods weren't with them tonight. Take heart, Long Beach won't be a walk in the park, but UH should do quite well at the Pyramid.
Oh by the way, did you notice Pepperdine is starting to build momentum. Yes sportsfans, the Waves are starting to step up, but then again, so is my BYU. It's too close to make my prediction on what two MPSF teams will go to the Finals, but I've narrowed it down to BYU, Pepperdine, Hawaii and UCI (not necessarily in that order).
Hey Bookum, on the subject of color commentary... we could make a good color team for any match. Do you know any TV stations who would be interested? ;D

The MB is involved in every single block, he has to be a good blocker, and he'll get more opportunities for blocks than anyone else on the team. If he's no good, the other middles will hit .800 and tear you apart, or the outsides will have nice big open shots on the angles. He's not always the best blocker, but he should be a good blocker.

I doubt UCI plays anymore games in the bren. Not exactly a good streak in there, heh. I think Crawford is probably more comfortable for the players, and less comfortable for opposing teams(and the audience, unfortunately).
There were some CIA guys there tonight, but a lot of people were turned off knowing there wouldn't be room. There was the basketball game too.
And of course, though I hate to say it, Irvine fans aren't exactly the most dedicated of fans. When you're hot, they love you. Lose some games, and they don't know who you are.

Tucker is from garr high school, not sure what club he played for. They both played last year, off and on, tucker was usually libero, occasionally outside. Much better having him at outside, he should've been there last year too.
