I thought this may be a useful post to coaches out there who are looking for good equipment to buy. Here's the questions: What do you consider the absolute best indoor volleyball out there. What is a good training ball? (indoor again) What is the best outdoor ball? What is a good knock around outdoor ball? my choices: Mikasa VQ2000 best indoor (I know some say too soft, but oh well I like it) Training ball: same but with colored panels, helps teach spinning. Younger kids, OUr school system has a pretty decent Molten super soft ball, but it is very bouncy (kids under age of 12) Outdoor ball, really wouldn't know Knock around outdoor ball.....WalMart smiley face ball. Only pay $5. who can get ticked when it ends up in the pool or the dog catches it and goes running. )

Best indoor ball: the best ball has to be a Molten Pro Touch. Almost every college in the nation uses this ball and I would say that they are the barometer of quality. There is also that mikasa blue and yellow ball (may be the one you are talking about), but I played in the Cali juco system with that ball and all everyone did was complain about it. It jumps off of your hand and has some weird texture to it.
Best training ball: training for what? there is a "setter ball" out there, but I've just found that it hurts more than it helps. The best training a setter or volleyball player can have is push-ups. Stronger you are, harder you swing. Jump training can be used to, but make sure the kids you are doing it with have enough leg strength to withstand what they're doing to their bodies.
Best outdoor ball: I'm gonna go with the AVP ball just because its what the pros use. NBA uses Spalding so I'll say that has to be the best basketball also.
Best knockaround ball: pretty much anything that you can buy and don't care if you lose.
Shoes: I've found Mizuno's not to be too comfortable. I just like playing in Asics or Adidas running shoes. The way the shoe is made transfers well to volleyball, just beware of ankle injuries. Asiscs also makes some nice volleyball shoes, their new model is really nice (Hawaii wears them).

every men's collegiate conference uses the molten pro touch.
Setters typically like a ball that is a little lighter, but for hitters the pro touch is king.
Training ball. Personally I'd say train with the ball you are going to play with.
Knock around ball. Molten and Mikasa both have some 2nd tier balls that would work fine as a knockaround ball, and not cost what the high end ie Pro Touch would run. Outdoor Spalding for sure. Funny how they make such a great outdoor ball and such a crappy indoor ball.
Shoes you could go Mizuno, Asics, or actually the latest Nike men's shoe is a pretty good playing shoe although I wouldn't recommend it as a cross trainer.

Indoor ball: Molten Pro Touch (don't go for the Super Touch, it's not as good)
Outdoor ball: Wilson's AVP ball
Training: ALWAYS use the same ball you're gonna train with! It gets expensive, but is worth it.
Shoes: I dunno... never found a volleyball shoe in my size. I used basketball shoes.

Top Indoor: Throw off between the Molten Pro Touch and the Tachikara International Ball. I've played a little bit with both and they seem pretty identical on how they pass and hit/serve. Top Training: Gotta go with the Tachkiara SV5W Gold. They're great to play with and for a game ball in high school. Top Outdoor: The old school Wilson AVP with the raised leather panels. By far. Top Knock-Around: something else Top Shoes: I love Nike Shox personally. They've got a big platform for the shocks and it makes it nearly impossible to roll your ankle. The Shox provide a lot of cushioning for jumping, and yes it is noticeable.

Top Outdoor: The old school Wilson AVP with the raised leather panels. By far. I was a big fan of the old school Wilson AVP ball. But after I got used to the new AVP ball, I have grown accustomed to it and actually prefer it now. However, Wilson still sells their "old school" version!
