Poly wins game 3 27-30 Congrats to Cal Poly. UCSB should be ashamed, not because they lost, but because of how they played, especially in games 1 and 2. agree, the coaching staff at ucsb should be ashamed for not preparing the team against the 3-man block and or teaching the team to block better... You are at least consistant, mecca. You only show up after a loss and then only to bash Kathy. No comments from you when we beat LMU, although you had some trach talking to do before that match. No comment from you when we had FIFTEEN blocks in just 3 games against Pepperdine. You are nothing but a trash talker.

The "post-mortem":
1) Poly is a good team. Better outsides, better blocking, better setting and better coaching. I counted 5 coaches on their sidelines. Unfortunately UCSB only has 2, but that's a whole other story.
2) We needed to stop serving Kristin Jackson. When we lost last year at Poly she passed nearly every ball, and the same thing happened tonite.
3) Our middles may not be quick enough to close the block. There was a seam big enough to drive a truck through on most balls set to Poly's outsides. It seemed like Atherstone and Waller were almost hitting one on one at times.
4) Like "notcreative" said, Atherstone was killing us down the line all night long. Outside blockers are setting the block too far in and middles are still not closing. Outsides, get out to the pin, middles close the seam, and make them beat you cross court.
5) McLaughlin has to learn to get outside on her approach, she's often caught standing inside the court at the 10 ft line and is not getting enough of an outside approach to see the block and generate some power on her attack. When she takes a proper approach she can be very effective. Needs to be emphasized in practice.
6) Poly often had three up on our outside attack, this means that Brandt has to develop a more consistent back set, or they will camp out on us all day. She has the ability to do it, but it has to be worked on in practice.
7) Finally, will someone please tell the players that when you get a run of points going, and the other team has to call a timeout DONT MISS YOUR SERVE RIGHT OUT OF THE TIMEOUT!!!!!!!!!! Make them sideout.

QFT Figjam Especially #7 The truth is that we looked like we went into that match in "deer in the headlights" mode and that's pretty much how we played the whole match. What really scares me is next year. We lose Waldowski, Garbisch, and Hendrickson. Liete may be able to step up for the libero spot. McGlaughlin hasn't shown much all season. That leaves Saraceno as our go to outside for next year. It still leaves us one outside short and if there was any player ready we would have seen them already, so we will have to depend on another freshman with probably no bench again. Same at the second middle spot.

Well, I hate to talk about next season when the focus should really be on the rest of this season, but since there's really not much else to talk about...
I hope Leite can play Libero. Great serve, great digs, and pretty quick, but I wonder about her passing. Kathy rotates her out for Mclaughlin every time she's done serving. I'm not sure if that's just to get a hitter in the back row or if there are passing issues there. I think Leigh Stevenson is probably going to be working hard for that spot too, and it's anybody's guess what San Jose is going to be able to do when she returns. She was sort of supposed to be our libero last year, but wasn't quick enough. The players that stick with Kathy for 3 years or more tend to really improve upon whatever weaknesses they may have, so if she can get well and put in the blood/sweat/tears, who knows?
And let's not overlook Karlie Krieger or Kayce Mathess, both of whom are probably quite capable of stepping into that role.
So all out attempts were on the outside again huh? <sigh>

A four-game Gaucho win streak, followed by a lackluster team effort. There wasn't much exuberance by the Gaucho's after the Pepperdine win. Certainly nothing near the kind of spirit shown by Cal Poly. Why is that? Kathy Gregory - where is the love???
Note to Kathy: Fix your team. Repair their spirit now or face another player exodus in the spring.
