Honestly, with all that happened last weekend, did anyone think the player of the week would be from Oregon? www.pac-10.org/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/101606aaa.htmlCongrats to Sonja Newcombe though. From the stats mentioned in the article it sounds like she had a weekend worth recognizing.

Interesting, it looks like Kehoe was nominated for Stanford, and not Barboza, Richards, Girard, or Akinradewo, all of whom I thought had better games this weekend.

They couldn't give it to a Stanford player two weeks in a row. Not sure how you don't give it to a Stanford player though. Not taking anything away from Oregon but the matches in LA were the toughest in the league this weekend. Politics....

Who knows, maybe the conference thought Stanford was playing up to expectations, rather than above expectation. Stanford flopped for a while with the losses to BYU and Washington, but appears to be readjusting.

They do like to spread the recognition around. There'll probably be a couple more awards to the "lower half" teams before all this is over.

I don't understand Rich Feller's need to nominte Angie Pressey last week, and Morgan Beck this week. All three matches lost by Cal in sweeps, oops they won one against USC. Sorry Bearclause, just can't agree with those nominations-- your team has to win something.
I was glad to see Kehoe's nomination, but would have gone with the other three. I was hoping Richards had a chance at national POW.

Did you see the match at UCLA - they made Richards look silly in serve receive. A great player - yes but not deserving of National POW by a long shot. I guess I just expect a 1st team AA to be able to pass the ball consistently. She consistently shanked the ball Friday night in the serve receive pattern. To her defense it seems she tries to take some heat off the libero - who may as well have a target on her

Just listened to the UCLA game , but watched the USC match on TV. I didn't really get the message about shanked serves listening to the broadcast. I based the "chance at" remark on stats against 2 undefeated teams. Those were big time matches, not against, let's say, Oregon State. I was hoping Richards had a chance at national POW. I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with it. I doubt there's any real backlash against a player/team for nominating a player with little chance to win the award. Last weekend was Morgan Beck's best offensive performance since she arrived at Cal, and I'd like to think it was a way to let her know how much her contributions meant, even in a losing cause. There is not rule stating that a team has to win for its player to be nominated. I'm still ticked off about that weekend in 2004 where Gabrielle Abernathy hit .377 with 39 kills (9 total games) against the Arizona schools, and with 9(!) service aces against ASU. She put up the best stats of any Pac-10 player that weekend, but Tomasevic ended up getting it that week.

I'm still ticked off about that one too. Maybe Feller didn't nominate her.

Great numbers even though the passing was requiring her to run all over the court. Besides the political realities, maybe the Conference was confused: Note in the above article mentioning her nomination that she is referred to as a Senior Outside Hitter!

I'm still ticked off about that one too. Maybe Feller didn't nominate her. I think it's safe to assume she was nominated. I forgot to mention that was 9 aces with only 1 service error. She was absolutely "in the groove" ripping that jump serve all night, even if it wasn't an ace. The only thing I could think was that the "upset" wins of UW over the LA teams got Tomasevic brownie points. It might have been the first time the Huskies ever beat both teams on the same weekend.

I think either Girard or Kehoe deserved Pac 10 POW. They were great on both nights. I'd give the nod to Kehoe since her team's hitting was clicking in general. She looked much better these last two matches than the rest of the season.

The scope of Oregon's wins make Newcombe as deserving as anyone in the Pac-10 last week. The Ducks have not been above .500 in conference play in 17 years and had not beaten ASU or UA in their last 16 and 15 tries, respectively.
Not to mention that she had 17 kills vs. one error in the three-set win over the 'Cats.
Stanford was the best team in the league before last weekend, so it should not come as that big of a surprise that they swept in LA.

But they had not been playing like the best team in the conference.
