The Pacific men’s volleyball team fell for the first time this season to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, losing 3-0 on Friday, April 2. With the loss the Tigers drop to 7-17 overall and 3-14 in MPSF play while the Gauchos improve to 13-11 overall and 8-9 in conference.
Game scores for the match were: 31-29, 30-24, 30-25.
The Tigers best chance to capture the momentum of the match came in game one as they had a chance to take the game but allowed the Gauchos to steal the final two points and the game. Despite being the closest game of the match, the Tigers had their worst hitting performance of the match as they hit .133 with only 13 kills. The Gauchos did not fair much better as they hit only 10 points higher, finishing the game with a .143 hitting percentage.
Taking the momentum from game one, the Gauchos were able to capture the next two games and the match with relative ease, as the Tigers continued to struggle offensively. For the match, Pacific was outhit .232-to-.170. The Tigers did outblock the Gauchos 7.0-to-6.5, after recording five solo efforts on the night. Sophomore Brian Edwards (Valencia, Calif.), who came in to play late in the match, recorded two solo blocks, while also recording 16 assists.
On the night, Pacific was led by senior Sean Rodgers (Fresno, Calif.) and junior Brian Zodrow (Kaneohe, Hawaii) who each put down 11 kills.
The Gauchos also had two attackers in double figures as Evan Patak had a match-high 12 kills and Michael Kennedy recorded 10 kills.
The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 3, as they travel to Northridge, Calif. to take on the No. 5 ranked Cal State Northridge Matadors. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
