Saw Hodge last weekend and she is, indeed, extraordinary on offense. But isn't being such a passing liability going to hurt her chances?

Saw Hodge last weekend and she is, indeed, extraordinary on offense. But isn't being such a passing liability going to hurt her chances? Frankly no. If her offense is good enough, I don't think it really matters if she can pass on a dime as long as she does plays all-around.

It is between Engle, Hodge, and Carico.
With the stats given for Engle and Hodge, you have to take into account that Engle is doing it from the right side. So her kills should be lower and her blocks should be higher, IMO, than Hodges.
I think Carico is most deserving, but setters get snubbed all the time. I think it is hard to pass Carico up as a setter though b/c she is flat out amazing, and she bring the offensive threat that people look for!

Last year Fawcet won and she didi not play all the way around I checked PSU's stats from last season, and Fawcett had something like 1.7 DPG. Not mind-blowing but I don't think she could get those numbers from playing front-row only. Maybe she played all-around some of the time?

Maybe I'm just thinking of her not passing, but she was subbed out whenever I saw them play. I'd swear to it. Maybe.
I guess my question would be: If she played backrow in 2005, why not in 2006?

My point on Hodge is that she is playing all the way around, but she would actually be more valuable to her team if she didn't . I'd estimate her SPG (shanks per game) at about 2.7 last weekend.

I'd have to cast my vote for Carico. Better all around and has a bigger impact on her team. I would also vote for Carico, just after what I saw against Washington, Damn that girls is good. She's really calm for a freshman setter and really dominant with that left hand swing. Too bad Asia couldn't do nothing against Washington, what a waste of height...

Texas 22, her pct should be higher as well, because she gets less sets, from a higher pct zone at the net. Traditionally, middles should have the highest pct, followed by RS and than left. Engles stats just don't measure up. She has fewer kills, lower pct, fewer digs. It would suprise me to see a player win an award when another player is better in every statistical category. I think Engle is amazing, Hodge simply has better numbers.

For someone who was the #2 recruit.....Okogbaa is getting almost no playing time. Is she that "raw" of a player? Stanford could really use her on the right side.

My point on Hodge is that she is playing all the way around, but she would actually be more valuable to her team if she didn't . I'd estimate her SPG (shanks per game) at about 2.7 last weekend. While in general I would agree that bad passing is a bad thing, I think you overestimate what influence that has on people who are voting on these awards. Her defense isn't going to be closely scrutinized as long as she's hitting over .250 with 4+ kills/game, and ammassing more than 2.5 digs/game. I'm thinking of baseball's Gold Glove award where certain players got the award more on their offensive performance than anything else. Rafael Palmeiro got one in a year where he played in the field less than 30 times. Derek Jeter (universally considered to be an average at best defensive SS) got the award twice based on his offensive performance and a couple of highlight reel catches. Coaches voted on that award and will vote on Big-10 FOY and AVCA FOY.

Gotcha. Actually, I'm not overestimating -- I'm asking. But that sounds right to me.

Well, there really is no contest between Hodge and Engle when you put the numbers side by side. Carico is a great player, but is she having the impact that Hodge is? I don't know. Also, Hodge has in some big individual matches, put up insane numbers. It is harder to measure setters than attackers. Attackers are a number issue, setters there is a big element of intangibles. So you think USC would be doing this good with Kimi setting?
