Well, there really is no contest between Hodge and Engle when you put the numbers side by side. Carico is a great player, but is she having the impact that Hodge is? I don't know. Also, Hodge has in some big individual matches, put up insane numbers. It is harder to measure setters than attackers. Attackers are a number issue, setters there is a big element of intangibles. So you think USC would be doing this good with Kimi setting? Nope, Carico's setting definitely bumped up USC's performances by up to a few notches. With Cutura struggling, Carico could be the leading contender for Pac-10 FOY (Stanford, UCLA and UW do not play a freshman fulltime, do they?)

I think Sonja Newcombe at Oregon might have a shot at Pac10 FOY. She is most of the difference for a team that went from 2 Pac10 wins in 3 or 4 years to 5th in the standings. The coach may get COY too. I was not that impressed with SC. They are a significant notch below UW, Stanford and UCLA.

1 Hodge, Megan-so far has been a huge factor for Penn State, besides a rough match vs. Wisconsin she has been terrific
2 Okogbaa, Janet-has recieved very very little playing time
3 Engle, Ashley-got off to a slow start this season but has been great for Texas since
4 Dosty, Whitney-has 3.2 kills per game...but hitting just .119 and has 67 errors to 15 aces. I expect to be an AA by the time she graduates though.
5 Carico, Taylor-has been stellar so far, USC is a top 5 team in large part due to her
6 Glass, Alisha-fantastic, PSU is one of the best in the nation right now and Glass has been very effective 7 Brown, Blair-I think she is redshirting(don't quote me on that), if not, she hasn't seen any action so far which would be very bizarre.
8 Hooker, Destinee-3.4kpg on a .269 hitting percentage. Blocks should be a lot higher(although I think she'll improve on that as time goes on). Has the best potential of any player in this class.
9 Kaelin, Christina-3.7 kills, I haven't seen her play yet, but based on stats it seems like besides getting high kills her blocking and hitting percentages aren't great
10 Anderson, Sydney-great job so far, has put her team into the top 10.
11 Gurnell, Carrie-hasn't needed to contribute much so far
12 Cooper, Kori-nice job so far in the middle for NU
13 Bartek, Brooke-only appeared in 6 matches, I'm not sure what happened(did she redshirt?)
14 Fesl, Megan-I haven't seen her, but from stats it looks like she has done a good/decent job so far for UND
15 Perry, Becky-I think she is injured or redshirting
16 Carlson, Kindra-wasn't she headed to Washington?
17 Dailey, Cat-hasn't seen much PT at Cal
18 Wiley, Mindi-same situation as Cat Dailey
19 Hagerty, Rachelle-has seen very little PT at Minnesota
20 Dolgner, Brittney-Tough start to her career, but has been terrific for the Badgers, besides Glass and Hodge I think she is the best frosh in the Big 10.
Of the top 20, I think these players are the front runners for NFOY: Hodge Glass Engle Carico Holloway(not in top 20 but is a frontrunner)
Coming up right behind them: -Dolgner-a very strong finish could land her as a solid candidate -Anderson-if Utah continues to win and she continues to play well, she could be another strong candidate -Hooker-If she plays like she has the last 2 weeks, she could have a good shot at winning the award, she absolutely dominated Texas

Some of you guys have been reading this table wrong. Engle has more digs, not fewer.
To me what the table says is Hodge has been a stronger hitter, but Engle has contributed more as an all-round player.
Hodge about a K/G more, attack percentage +.028 Engle +.64 sets/G Engle +.15 digs/G blocks a wash serve - ? Hodge has more 13 aces but 15 more service errors

2 questions: 1)Are redshirt freshman eligible for this award and 2)Does the AVCA come out with a freshman AA team? If not, maybe the Volleytalkers could come up with a list.

That's what I thought. Then Holloway won't get consideration. Too bad there isn't a Freshman AA team.

Hodge has more 13 aces but 15 more service errors Engle plays the right side, which makes her the 2nd option to set. Digs seem like a wash. A RS theoretically gets more opportunities to block matching up against the LS. Those are frankly secondary considerations. If it were one player who played front-row vs another who played all-around, that might be a consideration. Hodge edges out Engle right now.

Does anybody really know what criteria they use?
If not, I guess we can all continue to pull our opinions out of our tailpipe....

I think it's pretty clear cut...Hodge is more of an offensive player with some challenges in the back row. Hodge is surrounded by 2 or 3 potential AA players in Fawcett, Harmotto and Walbridge, so teams have to focus on lots of hitters. Engle is one of the best all-around players in the game, regardless of class and can do more than Hodge to help her team. She has Moriarty to set and now, Hooker to help balance the scoring. Engle has carried way more of the load this year than Hodge has had to for PSU. Hooker is a great player and has a huge upside. Hooker may end up being a great player this year, but Engle carried the scoring load while waiting for Hooker to get over the Freshman jitters. Carico is a great setter and deserves consideration for any award for Freshman but USC looked great until they started playing decent teams......

Between the two of them, if i could pick one to transfer to Tennessee next year, it would be Engle. I'm not an expert though, and ive only seen the 3 times each. Also, Elyse Cusack is really really good. I still think that Engle is better and WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY cuter...........! stalker...
