Kansas State and Arizona? Wow, two teams that are perennial locks for the NCAA tourney and conference contenders, and both are having dismal as dismal gets kind of seasons.
Is this a hole they can dig themselves out of? I know Rubio has been blaming everything, but what does the KSU coach have to say?
Injuries? Lack of recruiting? Or is this just atemporary up like UCLA had in '96, Hawaii in '92, Texas in '00 and '03, Ohio State in '03, etc. (however, in those years the conference records weren't as bad...)?

I wonder if Suzie is on the hot seat at KSU??? When they won the Big 12 did she do it with Jim's players or her own? KSU is the cellar dwellar in the Big 12, that's pretty bad. Any Cat fans have any thoughts about this? I really like Suzie a lot as a person.

Well, I certainly don't think it's anywhere close to a continued downward spiral for Arizona. What we're all seeing this year is the result of a couple of years worth of recruiting classes that didn't work out. I have to think that some poor chances taken on some current players and a transfer that left ... Cumpston, have led to a very young and inexperienced team on the floor this year. Dosty, with a year under her belt and a full spring session of training and continued physical development is going to be unbelievable, just watch. Remember folks ... she touches 10'10" now and hasn't scratched the surface of training for volleyball. Norton and Buringrud need to keep up the high calorie diet and get stronger. A terrible blow for Arizona was having Kristina Baum lost for the season with the knee injury, without her there is no real leadership on the floor. Dominique Lamb is every bit as explosive as Meriweather, there's just a lack of a setter to get her the ball on a consistent basis. Rubio has a nice and deep recruiting class coming next year and I suspect that Paige Weber will start at setter. They are very, very excited about her.
It's not real pretty to watch this year but they have probably the best overall coaching staff they've had and with the class coming in and the young players that will learn from this year I think they will be on the way back up next year with a big improvement.

Kansas State certainly does have problems but at least a part of that is injuries. They are now playing with their 5-6 Libero as an OH (she didn't match up well against 6-5 Pavan) and they have had to convert one of their MBs to the other OH position. They are also 0-5 in five-game matches so it indicates they are not QUITE as far out of it as it may appear just by looking at records.
However, that said, they are in trouble I believe. They really haven't recruited any top-notch talent since Jimmy Mac left.

The improvement of Iowa State, Oklahoma, Baylor, etc. also doesn't help KSU, as they probably still would have beaten those teams with what they have now in years past. There just aren't easy wins for anyone but a dominant team like Nebraska in that conference anymore.

The beginning of the end for Dave Rubio.

KSU is pretty young also with only Warner being a senior. Not an especially strong recruiting class for next year however, but a nice 2008 recruit.
Anybody know what happened to Liliom. She's on the roster but isn't listed on their stats page so I assume that she's redshirting?
Given the six 5-gamer losses, (@texas, @mizzou, @tam, Okla, ISU, Ala) against strong teams, seems more of a tough breaks season than a downward spiral for the program.
I'd expect to see them in Top25 again next season.
SuzieF should start tapping back into the Nebraska HS pipeline that JimMc used to build his teams. Mizzou seems to have stolen that avenue ever since Lindsey Hunter uncommitted to KSU upon JimM's departure to UW. She ended up at Mizzou and a lot of Nebr players have since followed.

Hunter was awesome (is awesome). Too bad she didn't go to KState. While Hunter had a great career at Mizzou Lindsey and Suzie together would have been "like butter"!

I don't think KSU has stopped recruiting Nebraska, the level of DI talent has signifcantly dropped the last couple of years and it seems like Creighton has gotten most of those kids that were DI worthy to stay at home. I still dream about what would've happen if Hunter had been a Husker. There would be a couple more champion banners in our gym had she come.

The first thought I had when I saw this title was Kanoe Kamana'o's volleyball career. A fine career it was (and still is...), but it won't be capped off by a national title. I guess you could say this about 99% of all seniors.
