LOS ANGELES–Jimmy Pelzel had 15 kills and Matt Webber added 12 kills to lead the 10th-ranked UC Irvine men’s volleyball team to a 30-28, 30-22, 30-27 win over No. 15 USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (April 3) in USC’s Lyon Center. The Anteaters improved to 11-16 overall and 5-13 in the MPSF. USC, playing its final home match of the 2004 season, dropped to 6-19 overall and 4-14 in the MPSF. UCI’s Kyle Weichert had 8 blocks and 8 kills while hitting .615, while Webber and teammate Brett Reid each served 3 aces. Blake Tippett had a match-high 17 kills for USC, while Chris McKniff added 10 kills. The Anteaters outhit (.392 to .264), outblocked (14.0 to 9.0) and outserved (6 aces to 2) the Trojans. USC held a 19-13 lead in the first game, but UCI–which hit .333 and had 7 blocks in the game–crept back to within 23-21 before scoring 5 consecutive points to take a lead which it held. In the second game, the Anteaters opened up an early 8-4 edge and were never threatened while hitting .500. USC was up 22-17 and then 26-23 in the third game before UCI scored 5 points in a row to gain control. USC next travels to Northern California for MPSF matches at Pacific on Friday (April 9) and at No. 8 Stanford on Saturday (April 10).

UCI SWEEPS USC; WEICHERT, FORD SET SEASON RECORDS (Boxscore)
Los Angeles, CAlif. -- No. 10 UC Irvine swept No. 15 USC 3-0 (30-28, 30-22, 30-27) Saturday at the Lyon's Center.
The Anteaters improved to 11-16 overall and 5-13 in the MPSF. USC dropped to 6-19 overall and 4-14 in the MPSF.
With the score tied 10-10 in game one, USC went on a 9-3 run to take a 19-13 lead. The Anteaters closed the score to 21-20 on two consecutive UCI blocks. The teams traded points until another block by freshmen Matt Webber and David Smith was followed by three unanswered points by the Anteaters to give UCI a 26-23 advantage. UCI would go onto take the game 30-28 on a Webber kill. UCI would record seven blocks in game one. Senior Jimmy Pelzel led the team with six kills in the first stanza.
In game two, UCI had a 19-17 lead when Brett Reid added a kill and a service ace to give UCI a 21-17 cushion. USC could get no closer than three the rest of the way as the Anteaters won 30-22. UCI hit .500 (19-1-35) for the game.
UCI trailed 22-17 in game three when freshman Jayson Jablonsky came off the bench to pound three consecutive kills and record a block assist to narrow the Trojan lead to 22-21. USC scored the next two to extend the lead back to 24-21. The teams traded points until USC scored two in a row to hold the 26-23 lead. Matt Webber then took over the match recording three kills and two service aces to put UCI up 28-26. Following a Trojan block, UCI's BJ Fell knocked down an kill and a triple block from Jablonsky, Reid and senior Kyle Weichert ended the game 30-27.
Weichert totaled eight block assists on the night to bring his season total to 139 which is a new UCI record. Weichert passes Nic Vislay who had 133 last season.
Senior libero Greg Ford erased his own school record for digs in a season with six tonight to total 245 on the year. He recorded 243 last season.
Senior Jimmy Pelzel led UCI with 15 kills followed by Webber with 12. Reid totaled 44 set assists and had five digs. Reid and Webber each fired three service aces. Fell added seven kills and a match-high seven digs in the win.
The Anteaters outhit (.392 to .264), outblocked (14.0 to 9.0) and outserved (6 aces to 2) the Trojans.
USC was paced by Blake Tippett with a match-high 17 kills. Chris McKniff had 10 kills
UCI will travel to Hawaii next week, facing the Rainbow Warriors April 9 and 10.
