A true 6-2 would use a combination setter/hitter like Kelly Bowman in '04. Or (so I hear) Sharpley and Wendell. I've seen some unusual 6-2 patterns, like when Santa Clara had the middles sub for the setters and the libero subbed for other positions. Sorry, my mistake. You're right. On second thought, "true" is a rather loaded term. The 6-2 I mentioned (where both setters also hit) is the traditional kind. It's fairly common with 6 players in an open gym. What I've seen more often in recent years is one setter/hitter play opposite of two players subbing (a back-row setter and RS hitter). Or that 6-2 for a shorter player who only plays in the back row.

Regardless, I was reiterating the fact that i'm optimistic in Mafua running a 5-1.
Nowhere did I hint about me not knowing what a 6-2 was.

I have an Iolani t-shirt, shorts, jacket, and book bag. My twin brother has a Punahou t-shirt, sweatshirt, jacket, and bag. Sorry I just have to vent: Wolfgang!!! Gawd you're freaking irritating with all of this crap! You went to Iolani; your TWIN brother attended Punahou; you live in CA, yet you also own a house in Hawaii Kai.... who the hell are you? Bill Gates' nephew.... no wait lemme guess you have a direct relationship with Oprah Winfrey, right? Puhhlease.

Oprah Winfrey owns a house in Santa Barbara.
Okay, three things:
1. If I were a libero/DS player, I know Dave Shoji doesn't offer scholies for the likes of me. So, why not Texas? 2. I'm sure Jerritt can recruit, but how difficult is it to lure students to Texas? Top notch school, top notch athletic and academic facilities, top notch athletic department, comparatively low tuition. Is John Dunning a great recruiter or does Stanford pretty much recruit itself? You have to take Jerritt out of Texas and USC to determine his true recruiting proficiencies. 3. Schroers was my wrestling coach at Iolani.

Thanks for the update. And congrats to Texas, they are getting a good one. Just finished watching Kabalis' team take Herring's team to 3 games tonite with the last game that could've gone either way. Kabalis is such a good backrow player and I still hope Dave tries and recruit her as a libero before someone else does. Then again, who knows, she might want to play on her mother's team UH-Hilo where she can still be an outside hitter. The Hawaii state D1 championship match should be a good one, between Punahou and Kamehameha-Oahu. Not sure if Nordyke will be playing for Punahou, since she did sprain her foot which sidelined her during the Punahou vs. Kamehameha-Hawaii match.

It's just that the Wahine have SOOOO many hitters next year, maybe utilizing as many as possible would be a good thing? Hittle, Houston, Arnott, Keefe, Otineru. Maybe the Wahine should take use of their many options. It couldnt hurt. But I mean if they cant get four strong hitters than they can go back to a 5-1. I have no clue on Mafua and Kaaihue, but I'm hoping one can step up and fill the void of Kamana'o. anyway, knowing Shoji, 6-2 aint happening.

is kaaihue also a setter (in club?)... b/c she is exclusively an OH on her high school team? she's got solid all around skills.
but the player that HI absolutely needs to land is kanani herring. her play is vastly improved from last year. she's got incredible leaping ability and has quite an impressive array of shots in her arsenal for one so young (still only a junior).
and another thing ... a lot of HI's high school kids signed NLIs today... funny how the article only reports on the punahou kids.

SO will Kaaihue play setter or libero for Shoji? Jayme Lee is a returning starter, but Mafua has yet to play. So maybe Kaaihue will beat out Mafua, like the Kamana`o/Thurlby situation in 2003.

Herring is about 5'9" and is a outside hitter. She played with the Youth National Team recently. Her blocks isn't that great and neither is her serve. Her backrow skills is not bad. Her bread and butter is her hitting, lots of heat on it too and has all the shots down pretty much also. When I first saw her play, she reminded me of a shorter version of Willoughby. Let me see if I can dig up a picture of her, and if I do, I'll post it later.

BR skills? serving? blocking? i don't really either, but the state tournament is currently underway and they've been showing the games on tv (OC16). the final tomorrow night (punahou v. kamehameha), and will be on tv also at 7:30. herring is a junior on kamehameha. she was the state's POY last year, and was on the jr national team this summer. she's an OH, the announcers said she was 5'10". just watching her play tonight, it was clear that she was on a different level from the other players -- great leaping ability, a lot of athleticism complimented by some nicely refined fundamentals...

Looks like Kaaihue will be playing Libero. Article also says she is going to get a scholarship her Freshman year too.
Rainbows sign middle blocker, libero for 2007-'08 Advertiser Staff
Hawai'i got volleyball's long and short of it yesterday when Amanda Simmons and Punahou's Liz Ka'aihue, who had announced their intention of playing for the Rainbow Wahine months ago, officially committed on the first day national letters of intent could be signed.
Simmons is a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Des Plaines, Ill. She has helped Club Fusion to runner-up finishes the last two Junior Olympics. She is 57th on the prepvolleyball.com Senior Aces list, can touch 10 feet and ranked 28th in her senior class of 517 at Elk Grove High School, according to the Fusion Web site.
"We like Amanda for her athletic ability," UH coach Dave Shoji said. "She has all the tools. She's one of those players with a lot of upside, like a Nickie (Thomas). Physically, she's got what we need. She just needs to get stronger and get a lot more reps. Eventually she'll be a very good player for us."
Shoji sees Ka'aihue, a 5-8 hitter for the Buffanblu, in the backrow for the Rainbow Wahine. She will be the first libero on scholarship as a UH freshman. Previous liberos Melissa Villaroman and Ashley Watanabe earned scholarships during their careers. Freshman Jayme Lee, who starts at libero this season, is a walk-on.
"Liz is the first player we've felt so strongly about as a libero that we've given her a scholarship," said Shoji, whose wife Mary is Punahou's assistant coach. "It's becoming more of an important position and warrants having a scholarship player at that position as opposed to someone who just shows up.
"Liz is a highly competitive individual. She knows the game inside and out, has very natural instincts and is very aggressive. She's the type of player who wants to touch the ball on every play. Technically, she's a good passer and great defender."
Ka'aihue said she did not really consider any other college options since her junior year.
"I was set on going to UH, and they offered me early," she said.
Ka'aihue was 85th on the Senior Aces list. She is a two-time Advertiser All-State first team selection.
