What this team definitely lacked this year were a few more liberos. Actually, the team has many liberos. what they lack are quality liberos. The only strong Libero/DS the Wahine have is Lee. Duggins is close, but still not on par as to the Wahine DSs of the past. Sorry I didn't make the sarcasm clearer.

Herring is about 5'9" and is a outside hitter. She played with the Youth National Team recently. Her blocks isn't that great and neither is her serve. Her backrow skills is not bad. Her bread and butter is her hitting, lots of heat on it too and has all the shots down pretty much also. When I first saw her play, she reminded me of a shorter version of Willoughby. Let me see if I can dig up a picture of her, and if I do, I'll post it later. Here are a couple photos of her playing for the YNT:

Another recruit article. Glad Shoji is giving Ka'aihue a scholarship. www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061109/SPORTS0203/611090341/1037/SPORTSRainbows sign middle blocker, libero for 2007-'08 Advertiser Staff Hawai'i got volleyball's long and short of it yesterday when Amanda Simmons and Punahou's Liz Ka'aihue, who had announced their intention of playing for the Rainbow Wahine months ago, officially committed on the first day national letters of intent could be signed. Simmons is a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Des Plaines, Ill. She has helped Club Fusion to runner-up finishes the last two Junior Olympics. She is 57th on the prepvolleyball.com Senior Aces list, can touch 10 feet and ranked 28th in her senior class of 517 at Elk Grove High School, according to the Fusion Web site. "We like Amanda for her athletic ability," UH coach Dave Shoji said. "She has all the tools. She's one of those players with a lot of upside, like a Nickie (Thomas). Physically, she's got what we need. She just needs to get stronger and get a lot more reps. Eventually she'll be a very good player for us." Shoji sees Ka'aihue, a 5-8 hitter for the Buffanblu, in the backrow for the Rainbow Wahine. She will be the first libero on scholarship as a UH freshman. Previous liberos Melissa Villaroman and Ashley Watanabe earned scholarships during their careers. Freshman Jayme Lee, who starts at libero this season, is a walk-on. "Liz is the first player we've felt so strongly about as a libero that we've given her a scholarship," said Shoji, whose wife Mary is Punahou's assistant coach. "It's becoming more of an important position and warrants having a scholarship player at that position as opposed to someone who just shows up. "Liz is a highly competitive individual. She knows the game inside and out, has very natural instincts and is very aggressive. She's the type of player who wants to touch the ball on every play. Technically, she's a good passer and great defender." Ka'aihue said she did not really consider any other college options since her junior year. "I was set on going to UH, and they offered me early," she said. Ka'aihue was 85th on the Senior Aces list. She is a two-time Advertiser All-State first team selection.

Liz is a great libero, but also an outstanding setter, if need be. I'm sure Dave knows what he's doing in offering her this great opportunity to stay home to play in front of her home crowd.
Punahou Lib Sydney Yogi would also have been a great asset to the Bows. Too bad the timing wasn't right. She's lucky though, I mean c'mon, Texas ain't that bad of a deal. Great program, gaining a great fellow Punahou-ian. I hope Texas comes to Hawaii at some point so teammates ka'aihue and yogi can play on the same court again in the future.
Good luck to both girls tonight in the state champs.

it was mentioned during the telecast of Kamehameha v. Moanalua last night that a couple other players had committed. From Kam, the setter Kea Kea (to Pepperdine) and the opposite Logan Keala (to Rutgers).
another good one out on the court for Kamehameha was Jordon Meredith (listed as a 6'0" outside hitter). i wonder what program will be inheriting her. she's got great pop in her armswing. (not sure what year she currently is in HS).

Kanani Herring and Sydney Yogi both played on the Youth National Team last summer. One of their teams will be crowned State Champions tonight after they play each other.
