Congrats to Kelsey on the 1st team honor and Amber on the 2nd team honor.
GAINESVILLE, Fla.
University of Florida sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Bowers (Gainesville, Fla.) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America District III first team, while junior opposite hitter Amber McCray (Longview, Texas) was honored as a second team selection as announced on Thursday.
As a first team selection, Bowers will advance to the national ballot with the Academic All-America team set to be announced Tuesday, Nov. 28. Duke and Florida were the only schools in the district to place at least two athletes on the first and second teams.
Bowers, a sophomore with a 3.95 grade point average majoring in journalism, was a Southeastern Conference Freshman Academic Honor Roll selection in 2005. She leads the SEC and ranks sixth nationally in hitting efficiency at .425 and is third in the lead in blocks per game (1.45). Earlier this season, Bowers broke a 13-year old Florida record for block assists in a match by collecting 13 at Alabama to break the old mark of 11. Her current hitting efficiency would rank third in school history, while her blocking average would rank eighth.
McCray, a junior with a 3.77 gpa majoring in journalism with a minor in African-American studies, is a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection and was named to the Academic All-District III third team in 2005. McCray leads the Gators in both points per game (4.21) and kills per game (3.71) and ranks fifth in the SEC in hitting efficiency at .372. She was named the MVP of the Campus USA Credit Union Classic earlier in the season and has hit above .300 in 17 of 22 matches in 2006.
Florida returns to action on Sunday when the Gators host Mississippi State at 1 p.m. at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. If Florida's soccer team advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the match will be carried on Rock 104. If the soccer team fails to advance, it will be broadcast on WRUF-AM 850. Regardless, it will be carried on www.GatorZone.com and is available via GatorVision Online.
