I don't think he is despised by other coaches. It's just that he really has given that much back to the volleyball community! Hmm...Interesting statement. I can't honestly argue with that. I might be too young to really get a good feel for what he did earlier in his career and the level of volleyball that he worked with. I certainly don't think he has done much recently to further volleyball. He has produced some great talent, but not much else. But I also think that the older coaches are not as active as they used to be. Look at the women's side of volleyball and you see the same thing. The "deans of women's volleyball" like Banachowski, Dunning, Shoji and the likes of them haven't done much recently to develop or further volleyball. These coaches develop great players and put together great teams to compete for the national title. They hold clinics to teach volleyball to younger players in the community. But they are not as involved with USA Volleyball or the AVCA. We are seeing the second generation of coaches like Wise and Cook, working to move college volleyball forward and developing new ideas for the game.

"produced great talent". IMO Al Scates has the ability to recruit great talent as opposed to producing great talent.

I would have to agree that Scates isn't like the greatest volleyball mind in the College game. If you had a choice to go to UCLA or another school, anybody would go choose UCLA, mostly off of tradition.
With that being said, I think he is really good at recruiting. He consistently gets the top recruiting class every year. Therefore, he doesn't need to develop players. He just needs to motivate and figure out the right combinations to win. That is what he is good at. When it comes to great coaches who I respect i would have to go with McGown, Dunphy, and sometimes Wilton.
