WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sophomore middle hitter Stephanie Lynch became the first player in the storied history of Purdue volleyball to be named Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week on Monday. The honor follows her announcement as Big Ten Player of Week Monday morning.
"It is a huge surprise, but it a great honor to have," Lynch said. "I was not even expecting to be Big Ten Player of the Week. I felt better about how I played, but I was surprised by how well I did statistically. It is just a tribute to our team because as a middle blocker you can't do it without your teammates. It helps when you have good passers and good setters playing with you and the other hitters also contribute to your success. The players around you make it easier. I couldn't have done it without my teammates."
The New Albany, Ind., native garnered the national player of the week accolade for her outstanding performances against two conference opponents last week, Northwestern and Illinois. In Purdue's first match of the week against Northwestern, Lynch had 15 kills in 25 attempts, with only two errors, for a .520 hitting percentage. In addition, she had a career-high 12 total blocks (three block solos, nine block assists), three aces and three digs to help lead the Boilermakers to a 3-1 win. The 12-block total was the second-best four-game match mark in Purdue history, and the first 12-block performance by a Boilermaker since 1992. She followed that performance with a season-high 16 kills in 19 attempts, with only one error, for a .789 hitting percentage in Purdue's 3-0 win over Illinois. The .789 mark was the second-best three-game match efficiency in school history. She also added four total blocks (two block solos, two block assists), one ace and one dig in the win. For the week, Lynch averaged 4.4 kills per game, a .636-per game hitting percentage and 2.3 blocks per game.
