VOLLEYBALL: USA Men Sweep Netherlands in Finale of Pacific Northwest Tour

PORTLAND, Ore. – Curt Toppel scored a match-high 15 points to lead the USA Men’s National Volleyball Team to a 3-0 win over the Netherlands in the finale of the Pacific Northwest Tour Sunday night at the Rose Garden Arena.
Toppel (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) had 14 kills, one block and a hitting percentage of .480 in the 25-22, 25-23, 25-16 win for the United States, its second victory out of three matches.
Team USA won the opener on June 2 in Spokane, Wash. (3-0) before losing in four sets on June 3 in Boise, Idaho.
Jim Polster (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) added 12 points on 10 kills and two blocks in the win. In the three matches, Polster scored 34 total points on 29 kills, four blocks and one service ace and posted a hitting percentage of .440.
Riley Salmon (League City, Texas) tallied 11 points on nine kills and two blocks and David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) chipped in with eight points on six kills, two blocks and a hitting percentage of .670 in his first match of the year.
Kay van Dijk scored a team-high 12 points on 12 kills and Marko Klok posted 11 points on nine kills and two blocks for the Dutch.
On Monday, both teams travel to San Diego to take part in the 2005 International Sports Invitational at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the campus of the University of San Diego. The tournament, which runs from June 8-12, also features Australia and China.
Preliminary competition in the volleyball event will be on Wednesday June 8, Thursday June 9 and Friday June 10, with the four teams competing in a round-robin format. Matches on the 8th, 9th and 10th will be at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. (Pacific Daylight Time).
The tournament semifinals (No. 1 seed vs. No. 4 seed; No. 2 seed vs. No. 3 seed) will be on Saturday June 11 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., while the third-place and championship matches are scheduled for Sunday, June 12 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.
