This might be fun. What would your Freshman Team of the Year be for EIVA, MIVA and MPSF?
A starting 6 and a Libero.

UCI's Webber for sure... I dunno if you want to count RS Freshmen but if yes than Evan Patak of UCSB. Setter probably Hawaii's Beckwith. I'll have to research for the others.

I think RS freshmen should be included because this is their first year on the court in the college game. Even though they have been with the team for a year, they don't have any court experience.

How about giving an award for the best on-line play by play "announcer"? ;D

OH's: Klosterman, Wiens, Weber MB's: Parfit, Smith-UCI Setter: Beckwith or Reid-UCI, Beckwith is by far the more talented but Reid started almost every game while Beckwith sat most of the second half. Libero: Hagstrom- Cal Baptist. Did any other true freshmen play this position this year? FOY: Klosterman- Could be POY if UCLA wins it all. They won't, but he is their MVP.

I think by NCAA rules, cannot be counted for FOY awards. But hey, no rules in the forum that say we can't put redshirts on the team. And fuzzball, I like your team. You got some nice picks in there, but Cal Baptist isn't a part of the MPSF, so I don't know if he can count on the all freshman team.

If my warriors do well in the MPSF tourny, which isn't impossible, then I think Beckwith should be FOY. But klosterman is very deserving as well, if redshirts are included Patak needs to be looked at.

I have said all along that Evan Patak makes or breaks Santa Barbara's team. But . . . he has been hurt for part of the year. He should be looked at, but I think I might pick Dan Rhodes from CSUN for the opposite over Patak. He has really helped Northridge out this year. I think it was an unexpected surprise. Patak was expected to be a factor all season, and he wasn't due to injuries.

Don't forget Batista (aka Daniel Almonte/Dominican Republic via Bronx Little League in NY) from BYU/Dominican Republic. He has by far the most impressive stats and impact to his team than any Freshman in the Conference. I know he's older, but remember when AVCA picked Barretto (Lewis) over Kimo Tuyay (Hawaii) and Scotty Tousinski (LBSU) their freshman year. Barretto was a 25 yr old (whatever age he was) Freshman of the Year. Redshirt Freshman should also be included.

Its great the two Northern Californians (Even Patak and Matt Weber) are even being considered for FOY. They played for the same junior's club (Diablo VBC), against each other in high school, and I've played both of them as well. Since Northern California isn't really recognized for its volleyball, I'm glad to see it being well represented by these two young guyz.

I looked at the AVCA website. Very interesting. Its not really a FOY award as it is a newcomer of the year award. Accordingly, any member of a D1 or D2 team that has no playing time before this year on the NCAA level is eligible for the award. So, incoming freshmans and redshirt freshmans are eligible for the award. Also, any transfer from a 2 year or NAIA school is also eligible for the award.

Then it has to be Hillman! Does he qualify? Is there an age limit? My bad. It shows he is a Sr. I don't remember him being around last year. Would he still qualify?

Hillman played for BYU last year so he wouldn't be eligible. But as Bookum points out, a player like Batista is eligible. He didn't play last year and even if he is a sophomore by status, he is eligible.

My Man Roy is always there for clarification. FOY is not a clear cut choice. I had Klosterman as my pre-season pick, and I still think he is the favorite, I'll put my money down that there will be a Co-Freshmen of the Year picked by the coaches. Bookumdanoaloha
