www.dailycal.org/article.php?id=14943They don't get much press (except when William Hung performs during the break) - even from the student paper. This one's a recap of their experience at the NIRSA Championships.

I feel the pain for Cal Men's Volleyball. Volleyball isnt too popular around here (only in Hawaii)
Your team played great @ Nationals.
Your new 6'9 black middle is really athletic. I thought he was a raw basketball recruit or something, but watching him play for a couple minutes made me realize he had some good experience. Why didnt he come out earlier in the year? Is he part of Cal Mens BBall?

Is he part of Cal Mens BBall? You mean #20? That's Rod Benson. He's 6'10" and a scholarship basketball player (uniform #0). He played VB at Torrey Pines HS in San Diego, and apparently was on the all-league team his senior year. He joined the team after the BB season was over. When I first saw him play, I thought he had all the skills, but he was a bit rusty and didn't have his timing with the setter down (he hadn't played much for a couple of years). When he did get his timing down, it was just plain filthy. At 6'10", he could hit over the block, if he didn't hit it out. A lot of his partial whiffs went down too - it's amazing what happens if you're 6'10". You should have seen him at the NorCal championships in Davis. MB Geronimo Chala went down with an injury, and Rod was subbed in. He was absolutely killing the ball against Fresno State. One of the UC Davis was yelling, "Set it to 20!"

We sure hope he can come back and join the team next year too. He will be a junior. Rod also just received the "Most Improved" award at the Men's basketball awards dinner this week, so he likely will be racking up points during bball season too.
The March madness calendar and men's vball calendar will have to be friendly we hope!

Are there any collegiate club teams out in Hawai'i? I have yet to see, or even hear of one. Knowing about the popularity of volleyball, and the sucess of all the womens and mens team, that there should be some club teams out there?
