From today's Kaleo...
>>>Sophomore outside hitter Jose Delgado did not play. Wilton said the team is contemplating red-shirting Delgado this season, so he was not eligible to play in the match.<<<
Makes sense, with all the outside hitters UH has, redshirting a couple hitters would help out UH in the long run. But I was surprised that Delgado is one of them.
Also, anyone know what happened to incoming recruits, Jeff Kim and Josh Cavin? If they are also be redshirting then it makes sense why they haven't shown up yet rught?

Delgado did not play well towards the late middle and end of last year. He seemed to be rather unfocused. I am not surprised he is redshirting. Do you know if anyone else will be redshirting this year?

Hmm...I haven't heard anything more on redshirts. But the Warriors do have some incoming players that might not be needed right now. Eric Kalima is a libero out of Kamehameha. Jake Muise, Matt Motter, and Arri Jecshke will all compete at libero. From what I have heard, Dio Dante has a ton of potential, but is a little raw.

Jose Delgado, Dio Dante, Eric Kalima, and Shaun Frederick are all redshirts on this years team.
This was already announced in the beginning of the season.

I doubt it. It's already halfway through the season, and Zimet seems to have been put back into the starting lineup with good results. The only situation where I can see Delgado being used is if someone goes down in the post season, when there is no time left to tinker. Otherwise I think Wilton would try Motter in there first, considering Delgado is a proven entity who he would want around as long as possible.

I hope Delgado stays red-shirted this season, for I am more curious on how well the other hitters on the team can play. Bender, Motter, and Jeschke are the ones I am referring to. I haven't seen them play OH at all, thus the curiousity.

jecshke is listed at 6'2", but that guy is no taller than 6' (still a hefty big bigger than my 5'1.75", but i'm a little asian girl). he would not be able to handle the big blocks of the mpsf.
bender is supposed to be the first guy off the bench for hawaii.
motter - let's get a look at this guy as an OH.

Arri Jeschke is no where near 6'2. He started during the alumni game and he was standing right next to Costas when they announced the starters and he is a good 3 inches shorter that Costas at the least. But he was pretty impressive considering his height. I definately think his height will play a factor though if he played outside against the rest of the MPSF.
Matt Bender has an awesome hit, but I've only seen him hit during warm-ups so I don't know how he would do against the blocks in the MPSF.
Matt Motter I think would be the first one of the bench because he was actually recruited as an outside hitter, but during fall work-outs, Mike Wilton noticed that he was an awesome passer. But I haven't seen Matt hit yet either, so I'm not sure how good he would be.
I definately think that it would be a toss-up between Matt Bender and Matt Motter for the next outside hitting spot if it was to open up.
