NO. 9 UC IRVINE UPENDS NO. 8 UC SANTA BARBARA (boxscore)
Irvine, Calif. – The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team kept its post-season hopes alive with a 3-1 (30-25, 30-24, 27-30, 30-26) victory over UC Santa Barbara Wednesday at Crawford Court.
The ninth-ranked Anteaters improve to 13-17 overall and 7-14 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UCI goes one game ahead of Stanford for the eighth and final spot in the MPSF Championships with one game to play. Stanford holds the tiebreaker over the Anteaters if the teams finish in a tie. No. 8 UC Santa Barbara goes to 14-14 overall and 9-12 in league action.
UCI jumped out to a 7-3 lead in game one and never looked back going to take the first game 30-25. Senior Jimmy Pelzel and freshman Matt Webber each had six kills in the game.
With the score tied 13-13, UCI rattled off six straight points to take a 19-13 advantage. UCSB could get no closer than four the rest of the way.
The score was knotted at 25-25 in game three when UCSB’s Evan Patak had two kills and a service ace to give the Gauchos the 28-25 lead. UCSB traded points to finish the game winning 30-27 in the third set.
In game four, UCI used a Santa Barbara service error and two consecutive blocks to break a 17-17 tie and lead 20-17. UCI would not trail again as they won the game 30-26 and the match 3-1.
Pelzel led UCI with 15 kills and three block assists. Matt Webber had 14 kills while hitting .571 (14-2-21), while freshman Jayson Jablonksy recorded 13 kills and hit .474 (13-4-19). Senior middle blocker Kyle Weichert added 10 kills without an error on 14 attempts to hit .714 for the match. Brett Reid totaled 59 set assists in the win.
UCSB’s Patak led all players with 26 kills followed by Michael Kennedy with 17 kills. Kennedy hit .667 (17-1-24) on the evening. UCSB was plagued by 21 service errors, but out-blocked the Anteaters 11.5-5.0. The Gauchos out-hit UC Irvine .394-.341.
The Anteaters close out the regular season, hosting No. 5 Cal State Northridge Saturday (Apr. 17) at 7:00 p.m. in Crawford Court. It is the final home match for seniors Jimmy Pelzel, Greg Ford, BJ Fell, Mike Garcia, Kyle Weichert and Spencer Bemus.
