TIGERS SWEEP NO. 10 STANFORD ON SENIOR NIGHT
Box Score
STOCKTON, Calif. — The Pacific Tigers men’s volleyball team took out No. 10 Stanford with a three game sweep on Wednesday, April 14, on a night in which the Tigers three seniors were being honored. With the win the Tigers improve to 9-19 overall and 5-16 in the MPSF while the Cardinal drop to 9-17 overall and 6-15 in conference.
Game scores for the match were: 30-28, 30-28, 30-25.
In addition to sweeping the No. 10 Cardinal and dropping their chances of post-season play on senior night, the Tigers and their fans saw senior Sean Rodgers (Fresno, Calif.) notch his 1000th kill of his career, making him just the third Tiger to reach such a plateau. Rodgers kill came in the third game and gave Pacific the 17-13 lead, a lead that the Tigers would not relinquish. He finished the night with 10 kills on .421 hitting, putting him at 1003 kills for his career.
Yet, Rodgers was not the focal point of the Tigers’ attack as junior Brian Zodrow (Kaneohe, Hawaii) took over the match and knocked down a match-high 23 kills, almost doubling the next highest attackers total. Zodrow hit .400 for the match while also putting up tallying three blocks and two assists to help the Tigers’ cause.
Game one of the match started out back-and-forth as neither team could take a substantial advantage. Stanford saw its first lead of the game, and its only lead until the middle of the third game, at 16-15 but then fell back behind Pacific on consecutive kills by Zodrow. The Tigers built a five point lead late at 26-21 and held on to take the opening game, finishing the Cardinal off with a kill by Zodrow.
The second game went in much the same manner as the first as the both team battled for every point, with the Tigers taking the same five point lead at 26-21. The Cardinal fought their way back but eventually were put away by the Tigers. Pacific outblocked the Cardinal 4.0-to-3.0 in game three and held Stanford to just .179 hitting for the game.
The Tigers finished off the sweep in game three despite trailing for the first time since game one at 12-9. The Tigers capitalized on good serving and poor hitting by Stanford to take back control of the match and never look back. Pacific also got two key solo blocks from Mauricio Brizuela (Anucion, Paraguay) in the final four points of the match to seal the match for the Tigers. Brizuela finished the match with 11 kills (.474), three blocks, and a match-high eight digs.
Junior Nils Dauburs (Riga, Latvia) put up five blocks for Pacific while knocking down eight kills and two service aces while freshman Mitch Hazelett (Roanoke, Ind.) finished with 52 assists.
The Cardinal had just one hitter reach double figures as David Vogel put down 12 kills. Craig Buell led the team with three blocks as the Cardinal finished with 7.0 blocks to the Tigers 10.0.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, April 17, as they finish the 2004 season with a rematch against Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
I guess I should have had more faith in my team.
Go Tigers!
