I'm just curious, what would people's thoughts be on displaying IP addresses on posts? I know it's an option with the Proboards forums.
I'm just curious what you think. I'm posting this here, on the women's forum, and in general.
I'm not sure if I want it or not, but I think the discussion could help remind me of some things. I have a general idea of the specifics on both sides of the argument. I am just curious what rumors or thoughts people have here.
Thanks for your time.

I know that you are more computer smart that quite a few people, but would that mean that others would be able to contact us, through, say email or other ways? I mean, I like talking VB here, but my life outside of this is just that, my life and I would want to be harrassed by those who don't agree with me through other means... not that that would ever happen.... )

However, you give far more information by posting images in your profile. Yes, though, there is a security risk by posting IP addresses. I'm not sure that I'm interested in pushing the issue, but I would like to know people's thoughts on the matter. Please do express your opinions.

Yeah, I don't think I'd be interested in doing that. I want to keep my anonymity..

I am not interested either. There is already too much tracking going on. And, we already have to give up a lot of personal information due to the Patriot Act. I don't think I want to voluntarily give anybody any more information.
Sorry . . .

I really don't care either way. Most of my posts are from a dynamic Mindspring IP addr based in San Francisco or from an XO IP addr at work.
I remember participating in old message boards where the IP address was posted. Some were just numbers, while others were more descriptive. I used to use Anonymizer.com to post, since I didn't want my previous employer's IP addr to show up on the screen. I didn't go through those lengths when I was at home or using a public terminal.

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is an identifier for a particular machine on a particular network; it is part of a scheme to identify computers on the Internet. It is a unique number for every computer on the Internet, just like a phone number.
A typical IP address looks like this: 210.97.68.184
The octets serve a purpose other than simply separating the numbers. They are used to create classes of IP addresses that can be assigned to a particular business; government or other entity based on size and need. They are used to create classes of IP addresses that can be assigned to a particular business; government or other entity based on size and need.
When your computer is on-line, it has one of these addresses. When you talk to a website, that site also has an IP address. All communication is between these addresses. However, when you visit a website such as: (http://volleytalk.proboards10.com/index.cgiboard=menvb) your computer invisibly looks up the name "(http://volleytalk.proboards10.com/index.cgi?board=menvb) " and finds its IP address. The process is similar to looking up somebody's name in the phone book to get their telephone number.
When the sick freaks of this world are on the Internet looking up kids how do you think the authorities find out what door to kick down?
YUP you guessed it their IP address!! So people, do you really think it’s a good idea to share your IP address with someone you don’t know or trust??

An unnecessarily dumb idea. You can instant message anyone on here now.....why show the IP's?
