This afternoon, I watched the DVD of the 2006 NCAA 2nd round match between Hawaii and Long Beach State. Regarding the trash-talking, it was not that obvious from the TV broadcast what exactly was happening or what was said (for obvious reasons) and for all intents and purposes, I barely noticed those extracurricular shenanigans except when Chris MacLaughlin mentioned it on the air. I did rewind the DVD and I did catch those split-second long-distance shots of Verdin and others glaring across the net, but I was thinking, "what's the big whoop?" It seems the main perpetrators for the trash-talking and glares were Quincy Verdin and Alexis Crimes, with Mariko Crum not far behind. On one instance, Verdin got a yellow card. On the UH side, Juliana Sanders and Cayley Thurlby were doing it, too, so it wasn't exactly one-sided, you know what I mean? And of course, Jim and Chris sometimes make light-hearted jokes about Juliana Sanders' Kaneohe upbringing (i.e., thuggery) so it's expected from Sanders. By the way, I get a kick watching Sanders play. She smiles (with daggers) but she glares and yes, she scares the bejezus out of me, especially when I think of her Kaneohe upbringing. Anyway, I personally don't think trash-talking and glares are a big deal, especially in a sporting event, and particularly if the trash-talking is clever and witty and delivered with a British accent. But that's just me.
What I want to know is: What was said across the net?
On the flip side, I noticed Cayley and Juliana Sanders were yelling and glaring (unprovoked) across the net in the USC-UH match. So, it seems UH learned something from the LBSU match. (...or was it provoked by the USC players...hmmm...). Again, I think trash-talking and the like raises the entertainment value of these matches (but I may be alone on this opinion).
I didn't want to re-read that loooong UH vs. LBSU (NCAA 2nd round) thread from a month ago. I thought a new thread was needed, preferably started by me. By the way, I thought the UH-LBSU match was very entertaining.

In game 4 of the USC-UH match, Jamie Houston jumped up for a kill but she got stuffed by Asia Kaczor instead. Kaczor then celebrated her solo block and when she walked back to her huddle, she yelled out "That biatch!" It was hilarious!

Yes, I remember that - she said the "b" word and I thought that wasn't very classy. Coming from a top program you would think that players of her caliber wouldn't say those kinds of words. Let your actions speak rather than your words. Serves Asia right!! She got stuffed numerous times and Hawaii smashed USC in the fifth game 15-5. Bachi!!! LBSU has been known for that type of behavior on the court -- look where their progam is now - nowhere near the top!! What goes around comes around.

Honestly, I just love Juliana Sanders' facial expressions. Someone should go through all the Wahine matches and splice together a bunch of Juliana's kills and blocks just so we could see the entire spectrum of her emotions on the court. From inidignation to joy to defiance to holiday cheer. Very entertaining.

The Wahine still have some of the "old school" competetive edge. I really think it's part of what sets them apart!

When Juliana was a freshman, she used to cringe and make dejected faces whenever she made mistakes. It's like she was really hard on herself, and would end up on the bench with Kari Gregory or Melody Eckmier taking over.

of course trash talking is part of a sporting event but how much is too much. I recall from the 2005 Utah-Arizona match there being a lot of trash talk. The offical had to ask both sides to calm down. after the match it got to the point that Jennifer Abernathy had to be held back, by her teammates, as she was trying to cross the net. And this was while the teams were shaking hands. Too much?
