That's great news for UCLA. She is an amazing player, with one more year of high school to go. She could be the next big time player for Bruins.

I think this is great news for volleyball. If she committed to Stanford, college vb may be lame for the next few years.

I recall them discussing whether Gil or Browne should play RS in 2008 as if her commitment was a done deal. I saw Amanda Gil on an unofficial at Cal last year with another high profile 2008 recruit. Of course a lot of people were talking privately about which recruit is considering what program, and I was certainly hopeful.

Trying to get any teenager to go to college in her home town sounds like an uphill battle to me. Since the days of Lisa Sharpley and Kerri Walsh, who were recruited more than ten years ago, I don't remember any blue-chip local player staying in the Bay Area to play for Stanford. They've only had a handful of local players on the roster in that timeframe... Sara Dukes, Joanna Evans, and Alex Fisher are the three who come to mind.

Lindsay Kagawa was from Albany, Calif. and was a starter for the Cardinal her final two years I believe.

Lindsay Kagawa was from Albany, Calif. and was a starter for the Cardinal her final two years I believe. She was recruited as a DS and backup setter. She only started when Robyn Lewis was injured. I've met the young lady on many occasions, including while I was riding on public transportation. I even brought up that I saw a Berkeley HS basketball picture including one Doug Kagawa, a "5'7" playmaking guard" standing alongside future NBA player Phil Chenier. I guess nothing made her smile like bringing up her dad's basketball glory years. Apparently she was in on a surprise for her dad's last home game as Albany HS boys' basketball coach earlier this month. www.insidebayarea.com/oaklandtribune/prepsports/ci_5174467I'd also say that Katie Goldhahn was "local" even if not exactly from the Bay Area proper.

Are both of those "high profile 2008 recruits" in the picture?

When was the last time Stanford had more California (let alone local) players than they had out of state players? Not that I feel a particular problem with that, however, it seems their focus has been less on local / state players than on players from anywhere that are either highly ranked or they believe will best fit their team. Not all teams can (or will) be successful recruiting like that, but Stanford being as successful as they have been over the years can do it without the need to recruit in state / local kids unless they're similarly high ranked as those they've been successfully recruiting. What local players could Stanford have recruited in recent years that you believe could have contributed to their team at a comparable (or better) level than the players the Cardinal recruited instead?

I found a better photo of Amanda Gil from biggirlinthemiddle. www.biggirlinthemiddle.com/SBTOC06/1013.htm

Why has this thread become about Stanford and not UCLA, where Amanda committed? Well - threads on top players being recruited always seem to devolve into discussions of Stanford or Hawaii recruiting.

I think #8 for Mira Costa is Lane Carico, Taylor Carico's little sister.
UCLA just got a great recruit and with the addition of Bojana Todorovic the following year, the Bruins will continue to challenge for Final Fours for years to come. Not to mention, it'll be really fun to see Spicer set Gil over and over again (well, maybe not so much fun when they play Stanford...).

This is great for UCLA. Especially since they have a very good sophomore/junior class at the moment who will be seniors the time Gil gets there.
