We are very happy for Amanda but we were really wishing it would be "kill for Amanda on a set by Lindsy". ;D

As a 6'5" middle blocker, I have never seen her play backrow.

This is a great verbal for UCLA. The Bruins are on a roll and players like this is what is needed to compete with Stanford. As for her backrow play, at this point in time very few, if any, six five women can play the back row. Hopefully with time she can develop all the skills necessary to be succesful at this level.

How many top 25 type team MB play back row now, other than on serve? I can't think of any, although I'm sure there are some. With libero, lots of DS/libero candidates sticking with the game and liberal substitution rules I can't see many MB playing back row anymore at all.

Alix Klineman plays back-row. There were some claims that she got a bit flustered after getting targeted repeatedly in the CIF SS playoffs. Sarah Pavan also plays all-around and is 6'5". I saw Amanda Gil warm up during CIF D-II finals, and she seems to have all the skills, including back-row.

I've seen Amanda Gil play at least once a year since she was a 7th grader. The most striking thing about her is that she's improved significantly each year, something that speaks well for Vision, Mitty, and her. I just came back from Las Vegas where I watched her in a late tournament match with Encinitas. She plays one back row rotation when the middles serve. In one point, I saw her pick up about 5 digs in a pretty astonishing variety of ways. On the baseline, picking up tips (an amazing thing for a 6'5" player), one arm reach, etc. There are some DS's at this level who might not have made those plays. I don't know how consistent she is with it, but she looked really good in the backrow to me. Her blocking has always been a strength, but her offense also continues to get stronger, particularly on the slide. Of course, on the other hand, her team did lose to Encinitas in that particular match so having two 6'5" players isn't necessarily everything.
I'm sure UCLA is very happy and their 2008 team should have a lot of the necessary parts to contend for the national championship.
