How many WAC teams have proved they are as good as even the mid-level teams from the top three conferences? How many of them have advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAAs?

So true Ruffda. Besides enjoying a great home atmosphere on their island fortress, Hawaii plays no one of any consequence in their conference. They really don't even have an annual rivalry with anyone, like is experienced almost every week in the Big 12, the Big Ten, and the Pac 10. The WAC is more like a peripheral volleyball experience, rather than a total one........ I realize you are just being ornery for the sake of being ornery but this kind of arrogant elitist attitude is so juvenile. I'm sure the Nevada's and New Mexico's and all the other non-top 10 teams of the world really appreciate being told that they are of no consequence. Gee, I don't know why they even bother to play at all. Actually, I'd be glad to personally inform Nevada and New Mexico that in the D1 volleyball world, they really do not readily come to mind as formidable programs. And I'm not being elitist or ornery even. In the conferences I mentioned in my previous post, the conference powers actually get beaten by their conference foes occasionally. That doesn't happen in the WAC (OK, last year it did, finally...but what did it take, ten years of trying?) As you will come to learn after you have been on this board awhile, those terms (arrogant, elitist) are most readily and easily applied to aficianados of the Wahine. You will also shortly realize that on this forum there seem to be two camps of fans with regard to Hawaii. Those that love them, and those that....er, don't. It's not hard to figure out where I might stand (look at my avatar).

I understand completely now.

Any minute now, some Wahine fans carrying their banner will start chucking in their two cents....

Any minute now, some Wahine fans carrying their banner will start chucking in their two cents.... Me thinks you give yourself too much credit. I may be the only Wahine fan bothering to read a Badger thread. Besides, your opinion of the Wahine is really of no consequence.

I think the Big 10 does provide an advantage over the other conferences in at least one area: fan support. No one reaches Hawaii's level, but only really Iowa and Northwestern really don't bring out decent crowds on a regular basis. I would think that is better than playing road matches in front of small crowds, which is too often the case in most conferences. Hawaii probably draws more fans on the road due to the target on their back, but I doubt they really consider the other WAC schools to be rivals at this point.

I think the assessment of the Big 10 is a very good one. I think on average, the WAC leads in conference attendance, but that is boosted by Hawaii (although NMSU has been bringing in some good numbers as well). And Hawaii also boosts the attendance for the other programs. Not sure about the exact numbers, but Hawaii tends to be the biggest draw for the home matches for most of the WAC programs. But taking Hawaii out of the equation, the fan support in the WAC isn’t very strong overall. However, the Big 10 is producing a lot of fan support across all the programs. I also think the Big 12 is doing the same, with Nebraska obviously being the standard for their conference.
