USC Announces 2007 Schedule Women of Troy will open season with two tournaments at the Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES -- The USC women's volleyball program has released its 2007 schedule with the Women of Troy opening the season with two tournaments at the Galen Center. The Trojan Invitational will take place August 24-25 with Loyola Marymount, St. John's and Michigan State while the USC Classic will be held August 30-September 1 with Cal State Northridge, Duke and Mercer on the bill.
A total of 13 opponents on USC's slate played in last year's NCAA Tournament.
Along with the always competitive Pac-10 Conference schedule, USC will host Pepperdine (Sept. 5) and UC Irvine (Oct. 2) in nonconference action with a road match on Sept. 7 at Utah and a tournament on the road in Columbus, Ohio, (Sept. 14-15) against host Ohio State and Purdue.
Key Pac-10 home matches will take place on Saturday (Oct. 27) against Stanford, Friday (Nov. 2) against UCLA and Friday (Nov. 16) against Washington.
This will be the first full season for the program at the Galen Center.
USC is primed for an NCAA Final Four run with a squad that comprises of five seniors, including All-America second team outside hitter Asia Kaczor, sophomore setter Taylor Carico (2006 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year) and an incoming freshman class that includes four Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 players, 6-3 middle blocker Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach/Laguna Beach HS), 6-2 outside hitter Kimmee Roleder (Pasadena/Pasadena HS), 5-10 outside hitter/libero Geena Urango (Los Alamitos/Los Alamitos HS) and 6-4 middle blocker Lauren Williams (Houston, Texas/Stratford HS).

No one can accuse Mick of loading up on creampuffs, that is for sure. It takes a little bit of a hit due to the defections from Utah, but if there was a volleyball strength of schedule compilation, I would guess they would be very highly ranked on it.

For some reason, I am not impressed with the non-conference schedule. The only team that could give USC problems in its own tournaments would be Loyola Marymount, but even than, I wouldn't bet against USC. Pepperdine will be a good test, but as I've said before, I don't think they have the ball control to compete with the big girls and if USC serves tough, they should win easily. Utah would have been a good match, but because of the defections, the Trojans should win handily; I'll give Haley a pass there since it's difficult to predict who will transfer or not. As for Purdue or Ohio State, this is likely to be their only Top 25 match-ups. So two Top 25 match-up for an entire non-conference schedule doesn't exactly overwhelm me, especially with all the talent that he has returning and coming in.

The OCS isn't loaded with any heavywieghts (Penn State, Nebraska, Texas, Hawaii etc) but then again the Pac 10 is loaded and navigating through that conference is tough enough. Win that crown and you're guaranteed a high seed post season.

The Trojan Invitational and Trojan Classic are new Ibelieve....next season (2008) they will probably try to get the Texas's, The Hawai`is, the Nebraskas's etc to come.

roofed! - I have been an avid volleytalk reader for some time, and you always seem to have such wonderful information about USC. I am just wondering how you find out so much of the stuff you know? I think it is really cool! Do you work there or something? At any rate... keep the info coming!!!

That's a pretty nice schedule Mick has put together. I think that you hit the proverbial nail on the head with your choice of the word "Creampuff"

So two Top 25 match-up for an entire non-conference schedule doesn't exactly overwhelm me, especially with all the talent that he has returning and coming in. My thoughts were exactly the same as Sakibomb 25's when I first saw the schedule, especially looking at the home tournaments in Galen center. But one good thing is that the Pac-10 schedule will make up for the lack of tough OOC. Then again, what I've noticed over the last 2-3 years have been the top teams taking a light OOC schedule (maybe the "UW effect"?). Despite the returning and incoming talents, I believe there are many key question areas for USC: 1) OH Since the departure of Ross and Burdine, USC have been struggling in this area. Over the last few seasons, with the lack of true OHs (plus the injury to Gysin and Florian transfering out), the team had to resort to converting its MBs to become primary passer/hitter (Copenhagen), a passing MB (Bishop), converted OH (Venski) and primary hitting OH/MB in Candelas. The main issue this season is development of both Copenhagen (can she play like a natural OH?) and Gysin (will she be stronger?). I think Roleder will see significant playing time backing up Copenhagen and Gysin. 2) MB Last season, the MBs were becoming more of a non-factor as the season progressed. I think conditioning was a factor for Johansen as she looked tired and slow (both blocking and her slides), while Bishop and Tennant were still inconsistent with their hitting. For a team to challenge for national championship, I believe you need the MBs to open up the net for the OHs, and USC's MBs need to step up their hitting production. With Garrett and Williams coming in, I think Haley might also move Tennant to back up Kaczor at Opp. 3) Setter I am wondering who is the back-up setter? While the team has had 3-4 setters on the team in past 2-3 seasons, this season, it would be just Carico as scholie setter, and I pray that she remains healthy all season long. 4) Libero I think it would be either Urango or Hillgren. Or maybe, if Roleder starts as OH, then Haley could move Gysin to libero position (also more forgiving for her knees).

I just check usctrojans.com regularly to follow teams such as tennis (M/W), football, volleyball (W). Most of my analysis stems from what I saw on the court -- I learnt the basics of analyzing teams while watching the USC 2002/2003 teams -- their on-court demeanor, hitting repertoire and efficiency, competitiveness, chemistry etc.

That's a pretty nice schedule Mick has put together. I think that you hit the proverbial nail on the head with your choice of the word "Creampuff" it would only be a creampuff schedule if Long Beach State was on the slate...but I'm sure Mick wanted to play a competitive team so hopefully the 49ers can reorganize the program say around 2028....

While there are no top-10 teams in the non-conference schedule, there are a bunch of matches against teams in the 20-50 range, with very few against the Northwest South Dakota Tech type teams. The only real "creampuff" is (Johnny) Mercer.
I think this is a perfect schedule for team that knows they will be playing 6-8 conference matches against top-10 teams.
