As a parent I am proud of the girls. The community service is great. I would bet the girls will take more from the work than the intended recipients. Also, as a parent of a kid who grew up in Hawaii...an afternoon surfing will be like an early Christmas present. Also...thank you so much for the updates and links to places the kids have visited.
Aloha

Updates on VT are fabulous as are the girls' journal entries on the Concordia website. From all accounts, the girls are having a great time seeing a country and way of life so different from their own!!

Sorry for not getting this posted last night, but Vanguard beat the Nicaraguan National Team 3-2 in a come-from-behind effort. They were down 11-14 in the 5th and rattled off 5 straight to win in front of about 500 fans. Hopefully we'll get pictures posted soon because the court and surrounding scene was pretty amazing.
Concordia plays Nicaragua tonight at 7:00pm at the same court. Everything is really going well...

Quick note: There will be a lot of professional photos of the girls' activities yesterday in San Juan del Sur on: www.dancesar.comThey were "covering" the girls that cleaned/painted the clinic, visited some of the schools, and also the Vanguard vs. Nicaragua Match. They do a great job so I'm looking forward to seeing what they put up...

I just received a call from my daughter. She was giddy, just sharing all the things the team is doing. She was part of the Concordia group whom went to a school and gave the kids uniforms. She said the kids were so genuine and gratefull for the items. I guess those 6 years of Spanish class paid off as she said she spoke with the children in Spanish. She also spoke of getting to go the Mayor's private beach. She said they are in Granada and the food has been great. Last night they watched Vangaurd beat Nicaragua. She said its an outdoor court and the whole town was there. Approx. 500 fans. Lastly, the girls were invited to see and play with monkeys. She said they were so cute and are at a place that rescues them from injury or poor treatment. Anyway...It sounded like the kids are have the time of their lives. She had to go as they had to get ready for their game vs. Nicaragua

I found this link to some game footage from the Concordia vs. Nicaragua match from Aug 7th. Concordia is in the dark uniforms on the far side of the court.

Were they inside or outside in those photos from dansar? It was hard to tell from the floor/wall behind them.

Sorry for lagging everyone... the last 2 days have been rough...
Concordia lost 0-3 to Nicaragua on the 8th, and just didn't play a great game. Not to take anything away from the Nicaraguan Team as they played very well (in front of a packed house), but the girls from Concordia were clearly taxed by their activities the last days.
The 9th saw us leave our hotel in San Juan del Sur at 6am, only to get stuck at the Nica/Costa Rica border until after 12:00 noon! We pulled into San Jose at 6:15pm (for our 6:00pm match) and went straight to the gym. Vanguard suited up right away and beat the Costa Rican Jr. National Team 3-2 and then Concordia beat the Costa Rican National Team 3-2. I can't believe that both matches went 5 after we spent almost 13 hours on that bus, but these girls have really figured it out and are doing a great job keeping it together down here.
Tonight we finish up the tour with Concordia playing the Costa Rican Jr. National Team at 6:00pm (we should be on time this time...) and Vanguard playing their Sr. Team at 8:00pm. We have internet in the hotel, so we'll get the updated shortly afterwards. I'll also try to post games scores from tonight, last night, and the two night in SJDS if I can remember. I just have to find someone that has them. Most of the girls are in town today (gorgeous day) and I'm assuming they're all emailing and calling home once again...
As for the floor: In San Juan del Sur we actually played outside, and on actual concrete. Good times. Thank God the floor here in San Jose is a nice parquet (wood) floor and a nice facility overall...

Quick note: This gym...
...is the University of Managua sportshall. The call it "U de M". Its indoors, but there is about a 10 foot section of the upper wall that is fence (not solid), so there is a breeze, and occasionally the smell of burning trash from the surrounding neighborhood. The seating sections around the court have ceiling fans which kept it pretty nice and cool, but it was fairly hot and muggy on the court. The girls were sweating to say the least.
The floor was essentially concrete with a micrometer of gum-based-paint, if you can imagine that. Not the best surface for diving, but better than straight concrete like in San Juan del Sur.
I'm in shock that somewhere was there filming and got this up on uTube. Craziness...
