I saw this team practice last friday and damn this team looks good in practice. I can tell you this Roleder, Coppenhagen, and Gysin were hiting the snot out of the ball. Johansen has improved tremendously and tenant was hitting the slides very good. Garrett does not hit very hard but she can block. Seilhammer might be gone but Mick has at least 3 or 4 players that can pas and dig. I was very impressed by how Hilgren, Urango and that other girl (walk on I think) can play. If this team clicks they will be very dangerous. It looks like Mick has implemented more plays to give his hitters more one on one situations. If there passing is like what i saw friday, they will be final four bound

I agree. The whole thing for USC this year will be passing. If they pass, Carico is a good setter and they have a lot of hitting options to counter the fact that they don't have one stud put-away hitter. If they don't pass well, Carico is no Spicer out of system, and those offensive options are not going to do much for them. And they aren't going to win on blocking. I think if they can make up for the loss of Seilhammer in the serve receive game they are going to be #2 in the Pac-10 and give Stanford a very tough run for #1.

Selhammer was a great defender, but no means a great passer. i think Urango and Hilgren are about equal to Seilhammer with passing, the difference is digging, seilhammer is like a vacuum cleaner. I agree that paasing is the key and with Gysin gaining more confidence and Roleder pushing for playing time, this will be a dangerous team. This team also have 3 players that has a jump serve (Kaczor, Roleder, and Garrett) .

One of the advantages that this team has is the return of all starters (except libero) which allowed the coaches to install and practise more elaborate offensive system in the spring training and testing them out during their European trip in the summer. I think the passing will be fine, and the one area that I definitely would like to see improvement in is the MB position. The team needs its MBs to be more physical (back to days of Adams, Olsovsky and Candelas) both in blocking and hitting. If the MBs can open up the net for the OHs, then the team can go deep into the post-season.

This is an extremely talented team, but they seemed to lack passion in the previous season. The ball control should be there. The hitting should be there. I know a lot of the USC teams under Mick Haley are not very emotional, but last year's squad seemed to lack a competitive fire. I hope that's different this time around.

This year should see better team chemistry on and off the court. Last season, there were many new players (Carico, Gysin, Kaczor and Johansen) on the floor so they were still adjusting and not vocal (though I like how Kaczor talked to teammates, giving them props etc). Also, last year's co-captains were senior setters who didn't see much playing time, and as such kinda awkward for the younger players on the court to assume floor leadership. I believe the time spent in spring with all starting hitters working out a more complicated offense with the setter, and testing them out in Europe in the summer will be a huge benefit for USC. I can't wait to see how this team measures up when the season opens next weekend.

Seems to me this team needs to figure out how to play better out of system. That becomes even more important as you get deeper into the tournament --- longer rallies, more odd bounces, etc.
Last year's team was type that looked great in warm ups banging the crap out of the ball, but didn't fare as well after the whistle blew and reality set in. A year of seasoning for the new players should help that.
