Match about to start... live stats @ www.uwbadgers.com/live/vbLive video @ uwbadgers.com and on the upper right click on broadcasts and then video. I won't post often since it's not a very interesting match, but during each timeout I'll update the score.

DuPont starting at OH, not Allison Wack. The rest of the lineup is as to be expected, Simpson setting, Dolgner outside, Reineke middle, Jeffers middle, Dykstra opposite, Wack libero.

Good first game from WI. UWM showed some solid defense though. Dolgner is clearly the best player on the court.

UW takes game three 30-19 and sweeps the match. Dolgner, Reineke and DuPont play well for UW offensively. Wack is solid in the backrow and lots of subs get to play overall.

It wasn't the prettiest match, but at least the Badgers started off with a sweep. I hope the Badgers can cut down on the unforced errors before next weekend, when they will have less margin for error. UWM is probably the best team the Badgers will face this weekend, but it is tough having two freshmen starting in the middle. The Panthers are a scrappy defensive team, and Felsing and Gabrielsen are solid hitters, so I expect they will again compete for the Horizon League title. They did feel the loss of their senior middles from last year tonight, though. They also gave up some big scoring runs when their passing broke down; they found it really tough to put the ball away when their offensive options were limited. Having Dolgner in those types of situations really helps.
The Badgers showed they have the potential to be a very good team tonight, but they will have to play more cleanly. Simpson had more off sets than usual, but she also made some really nice plays. She went to a lot of quick sets in the middle, more so than in the past. Reineke had an impressive match. She had eight kills with only one error and pretty much dominated at the net. She had six blocks and caused a lot of hitting errors when the Panthers tried to avoid her block. If not for Milwaukee's strong coverage of their hitters, she could have had even more blocks. It was a really nice start for her. Dolgner was her usual impressive self offensively, with sixteen kills at .265, some of which were quite impressive. Simpson went to her a lot in the back row tonight. DuPont, despite an ugly bruise on her leg, had a good start to the year, hitting .438 with nine kills. She also almost knocked over the Panthers' libero with a serve when she served in the third game before being subbed out for the rest of the back row rotation. Jackie did a good job of getting her the ball in a lot of one on one (or zero) situations. I hope she gets some swings on off plays tomorrow, since she will have to put the ball away in that situation at some point. Also, it will make it less obvious that Dolgner is getting the ball in the back row.
Jeffers is a work in progress in the middle, but she had a couple of nice kills on the back slide tonight, which is something new for her. She also unloaded on a couple of quicks in the middle, which, as expected, made up the majority of her attacks. Dykstra struggled offensively at right side, as the Panthers dug her effectively and she hit a couple of balls out of bounds, so Salow replaced about halfway through and played okay. Either provides a really big block, especially in the rotations with Reineke.
The biggest problem tonight for the Badgers was that their passing was inconsistent. Schmitting really disrupted their passing with a standing float serve and served some UWM scoring runs. On the good side, when they were able to pass well, the offense was pretty efficient. Also, the floor defense was pretty strong for the Badgers tonight. Wack led them with sixteen digs, and Simpson had nine, a really good effort from her. I think this team should be really tough to score against; UWM only hit .074 for the match. Their defense held Wisconsin to .233, so there were some nice rallies with both sides making big plays. Usually, though, the Badgers ended up taking the point, which is a good sign for the home team.
Finally, AWack, Kuzma, and Klingsporn got their first match action in the third game, with Kuzma replacing Mills playing back row the entire game. AWack's first kill, and I think Klingsporn's first assist, came on a kill from the right side. Allison also had a nice block, moving ahead of her sister on the career list. Anyway, it is good to start out with a sweep. I hope the Badgers can cut down on the mistakes tomorrow, but I give UWM a lot of credit for slowing down the Badger offense.
