Troubled economic times has hit Volleyball Magazine. I was grateful for the effort that the staff put into this past years editions and was really looking forward to their pictures and coverage of the NCAA's, JO's and Fab 50's.
Has anyone heard who will step up to take over.....hopefully.
Has anyone thought about starting an on-line magazine at least. I wish I had the knowhow.
I'm bummed!

I have an idea! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) CSTV has a forum... Lets start a constructive, positive volleyball thread. Perhaps the more activity, the more CSTV will help promote and broadcast volleyball matches. We can even use the upcoming Boys nationals in Texas, who is playing for what club and who has committed to what D1 colleges...thereby staying with the "College Sports TV" theme. Do you think Volleyball magazine will be refunding subsciption prepayments? Will the magazine continue? Was it just the website that went down?

This was on VolleyCentral.com
Volleyball Magazine Owner Ceases Operations
The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported last Friday that Ashton International Media, the publisher of Volleyball magazine, has ceased operations.
Ashton Media had purchased Volleyball magazine in 2002 from Primedia for a small down payment and promissory notes, but when Ashton didn't make the agreed upon payments, Primedia sued. A judge ruled against Ashton in September 2003.
According to the Telegram & Gazette story, a potential outside investor contacted Ashton, but talks between the two broke down, and then Ashton discovered that this individual had subsequently purchased the promisorry notes.
The Telegram article goes on to say that Ashton Media then asked a judge to prevent the individual from seeking payment. Not only did the judge say no, he put Ashton Media into receivership.
Rather than wait to see what a court-appointed receiver would do (liquidate the company to repay the debt or continue to operate it), Ashton Media founder and CEO Mark Lund decided to lay off all Ashton Media employees and cease operations.
For subscribers waiting for the latest issue of Volleyball, it doesn't look promising. In addition to all this, the Telegram & Gazette reports that the printing company for Ashton Media is owed $500,000 and is holding the latest issues of three different magazines until things get resolved.
According to the Telegram & Gazette, "If a suitable deal is reached within two to three weeks . . . he (Mark Lund) will call back the staff and resume operations. Yesterday, however, he seemed doubtful that would happen."
When Ashton first purchased Volleyball magazine, an article here on VolleyCentral reported on how the employees at that time were all terminated after disagreeing on the future direction of the magazine. The article prompted a letter from Ashton Media to VolleyCentral's editor threatening legal action for maligning Ashton. VolleyCentral's reply was to simply ask, "What was incorrect in the article?" Ashton Media never responded.

I posted a few times on the CSTV message boards. It has 4 boards for football, m basketball, w basketball, and baseball. It also has a bunch of boards for each school. But none for vb - men or woman.

So do we do a class action lawsuit to get our refund? Probably not worth enough $. Look at the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure: www.law.cornell.edu/rules/frcp/Rule23.htmProbably not worth it. If they are bankrupt how will they pay damages? Only liquidated assets would be of value and their immediate debts would be paid first--the printing company, backpay for employees, etc. By the time the subscribers came up, there would be nothing left. If you did get anything it would be just a couple of cents. Like those stock class actions. You get a check for a cent or two per share. Would cost more in legal expenses than you would get back in damages.

I'm glad I let my subscription run out. I wanted more from the magazine like drills and stuff, I didn't care too much for all the other stuff, don't saying it was wrong, but I'm just not into that. I do like the VB stuff I get from the AVCA.
I feel bad for you VBmom. That stinks.

No they didn't answer any email or snail mail.

I am also paid up til 2008. The reason is that I had renewed the subscription during the time when it was sold. After several months of not receiving any magazine and no charge showing up on my credit card, I called them. They had no record of the previous request. I ordered the magazine using another credit card. About a month later I receive my credit card statements. One statement shows a subscription to Volleyball Magazine the other shows a subscription to Teddy Bears and Friends. I call to say that I did not order Teddy Bear and Friends and ask for a refund. They then tell me that their policy is no refunds and that my subscription is to Volleyball Magazine and it is until 2008. I explained that the only reason they had two orders from me was because they did not have good record keeping and couldn't find the other. Mind you there had not been any charges show up until they both showed up. I complained to Better Business Bureau . . . and lost. Now I am out the dollars and a magazine . . . ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png)

Well, Volleyball Mag is gone, but I hope you continue to receive Teddy Bear and Friends. It sounds like a cheerful rag.

They say Teddy was quite the setter in his day. The comment I always used to hear from people who saw him play was "Softest hands I've ever seen...".

Yikes! Teddy Bears - not cool.
Mine is out so far because they kept sending me renewal notices and I thought that it must be coming due, so I would renew for several years, but then I got another notice and thought it hadn't been long enough, so I called (this was at least three years ago) and they told me I was paid up through 2008, so I started ignoring all of those mailers.
I can't believe they are just going to fold. Why buy the magazine if you couldn't continue to produce it?
