The Cyclones also upended then 21st-ranked Louisiana State just over a week ago. The win also makes ISU 2-0 in Big 12 play for the first time in school history.
“I feel like we have beaten two very solid teams,” said Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson. “We still have a lot of work to do but we will continue to get better.”
Iowa State got a match-high 16 kills from senior Erin Boeve, who has now reached double-figure kills 57 times in her career. Middle blocker Jen Malcom and Boeve’s fellow outside hitter, Mary Bisenius, added 12 kills each in the win.
“Mary has been really impressive as of late,” added Johnson. “She has really stuck with it and has earned her spot on the team with hard work and commitment.”
The Cyclones were equally impressive on defense as Amy Vos matched libero Ashley Mass with a career-high 16 digs in the win. Laura Cady also added double-figure digs with 11. The Cyclones out blocked the Aggies, nine to eight, getting a solo block and three block assists from setter Kaylee Manns, who also had 53 assists, nine digs and five kills in the match. The Cyclones, who dug 25 balls in the game and held A&M to a .176 hitting percentage, raced out to a 10-2 lead following back-to-back kills by Boeve and Malcom. The Aggies scrapped back though, tying the game at 19-19 on a kill from Ammerman, but ISU was too much as they never allowed A&M to regain the lead and got a kill from Bisenius to end the game.
Texas A&M led 11-9 in the second game on a kill by Jillian Phillips, but the Cyclones got hot offensively and finished the game hitting .325 to pick up the 30-27 win and head into intermission with the 2-0 lead. The teams were tied at 24 but kills by Diane Kieger and Boeve pushed the Cyclone lead to 26-24. Texas A&M fought back to tie it at 26 but a service error gave the lead back to the Cyclones. A Malcom kill forced an Aggie timeout and A&M responded with a kill by Mary Batis to draw to within one at 28-27. Boeve hammered home the next point and the Aggies committed an attack error to give ISU the game.
The Cyclones raced out to a 17-7 lead on a kill by Bisenius and cruised to a 30-23 win, with Lauren Cummings punctuating the victory, ISU’s third straight over Texas A&M dating back to last season, with a kill.
