These two teams played against each other last night at Cal State Northridge where I was expecting a tight match, but in the end it was UC Irvine who was the dominant team in each game to win the match in four games.
I finally got to see CSUN in person expecting them to be a sharper and improved team from two years ago and last year(when the majority of the team was all freshmens) as well as wondering why these team has a losing record. Well I finally found out why CSUN isn't winning matches as they were being outplayed be a real good UCI team(I would not be surprised if they end up being in one of the top three teams in Big West standings at the end of conference play).
Trying to keep this summary short CSUN didn't pass well when they received serves making KAYLA WRIGHT running all over the court and all she could was set outside and the achilles heel for CSUN(and the past two years)...poor defense/ball control where a few times they let the ball drop between themselves or didn't bother to go after a stray ball that could've been in play - they sorta gave up.
In all the games CSUN never had the lead or if they did it was just by one point so most of the time they tied with UCI and when they did they would do some stupid mistake giving UCI a free point where UCI would later extend their lead in the three games that UCI won.
I can see why Coach Stork put in freshmen outside hitters ALEX JOHNSON and BRITTANY WILLIAMS as starters over junior HARMONY BURDINE and sophomore SIARA GRAYSON because those Johnson and Williams are physical and smart players even though they do go in a streak making lots of small mistakes. I am especially impressed with Johnson...is quite vocal and plays with lots of intensity.
As for UCI they really improved from last year and playing at a level I thought CSUN would be at right now. The UCI players that stood out were KARI PESTOLESI(played like a verteran...very steady and has more heat on her spike than our starting OH hitters), Lauren Kellerman and their libero(who just dug up everything and gave CSUN fits with her jump serves).
Overall it was a disappointing home-opening match for me to watch and I'm sure it was the the same to the coaches, players(and each players inner circle). Not a match to remember.
It's over next up is UC Riverside.
The score of each game, 20-30, 26-30, 30-26, 27-30.
