The buzz yesterday after UOP pulled off the unthinkable upset of Cal Poly: apparently UOP failed to upload their match vs. UCSB (as per Big West rules) and claimed "technical difficulties". Meanwhile, the Big West server was working and all other schools mananged to get their matches up on the Big West server (this is the equivalent to failing to provide a promissed tape in a tape exchange agreement). The "win at all cost" mentality is so bad in club, it is classless to say the least and downright cheating at worst that UOP pulled this weak stunt. It is not an excuse for Cal Poly, as UOP played well in games 2, 3, and 4. However, Poly has a staff that is expert in breaking down tape, UOP had changed their lineup the night before, and it is all too convenient to think it was mere coincidence. Bad form Charlie...but "if you're not cheating, you're not trying"...right? Or is it just plain wrong to do what UOP did. A hollow victory for them.

If it happens more than once, I would have to wonder. If it is just this once, I would chalk that up to "technical difficulties", just as they said. After all, look how often GameTracker screws up and how often MANY other things on the internet and computers go wrong.

How about having your team show up with notebooks to a conference match??? I didn't see anybody post about it, but Wade and company brought the Pacific girls to the Fullerton/Davis match last week. Two points into the match the Pacific girls were escorted out for violating scouting protocol... So, last weekend a scouting violation, this week a video 'problem'... smells like a win at all cost attitude.

The girls showing up with the coach? The girls taking school transportation to the other game? I cant imagine the rules say they arnt allowed to go to a conference game not involving them?

showing up with notebooks.... makes it a scouting function, explicitly against the rules.

Wow, I am really surprised that Charlie would do something like that. No, scouting is not allowed. The UoP staff should know better.

showing up with notebooks.... makes it a scouting function, explicitly against the rules. So if 4 of them got in their own car, and drove to the match, and paid for it themselves, they wouldnt be allowed to write anything down?

They knew better. Just so everybody knows... Cal Poly was guilty of the EXACT same video 'problem' last weekend. They beat Beach in three and did not post their match, hence Northridge could not watch it Saturday. Ironic actually. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Every staff in the country knows this rule. The NCAA better crack down hard on them for cheating. As more money is invested in woman's athletics the pressure to win also comes with it. I'm afraid we will see more cheating going on not less.

In fact, if they were to do this, they would be well-advised to obtain the coach's permissions (from the coaches playing the match they are watching). If the coaches believe that they are there for scouting, then they are within their rights to keep the players out of the arena. Them's the rules. Debate'em if you want, but until they're changed, they will be followed.

Aside from being kicked out of the arena, what is the penalty for scouting?

A conference wide email from the Big West saying this is a big 'no-no'

Ironic that you can't travel to scout a team in person. However, if your team is fortunate to play on TV or webcasts their matches you can scout them then.

But the no-scouting rule goes beyond the conference, right? I thought that was an NCAA thing. I know for a fact that a coach I know wanted to attend a match between two teams that were not even opponents of this person's team because they had a friend who was on the staff of one of the teams, and still had to get permission to do it. This was not Big West, and was non-conference.
So I think the no scouting rule goes higher up.
The video posting thing is a conference agreement issue, OTOH.

Breaking a minor infraction like scouting is not a reason to not send your daughter to UOP. Come on. As for the video problem, sounds like it's happened before, so no reason to assume UOP is making it up, is there?
