COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 5, 2007) - The U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team has released its preliminary 19-player roster (O-2) for the upcoming FIVB World Cup to be played Nov. 2-16 in various cities in Japan. The 19-player roster, which will be trimmed to the maximum 12 players prior to the World Cup, is dominated by players with international experience.
The roster includes nine players with Olympic Games experience. Danielle Scott-Arruda (Baton Rouge, La.) is seeking her fourth consecutive World Cup roster spot, while Robyn Ah Mow-Santos (Honolulu) and Stacy Sykora (Burleson, Texas) have already appeared in two previous World Cup tournaments.
The setters named to the preliminary roster include Ah Mow-Santos, Lindsey Berg (Honolulu) and Courtney Thompson (Kent, Wash.). Ah Mow-Santos has been the starting setter this year at the Pan American Cup, World Grand Prix and NORCECA Continental Championship. Berg, who was on the 2004 Olympic Games roster with Ah Mow-Santos, bolsters the position as she returned to the team in August and was a reserve at the NORCECA Continental Championship. Thompson competed in the first three tournaments of the 2007 season and started the final three matches at the Pan American Games leading Team USA to a bronze medal.
Middle blockers on the 19-player roster include Olympic veterans Scott-Arruda and Heather Bown (Yorba Linda, Calif.), along with Jennifer Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) and Norisha Campbell (Lakeland, Fla.) Scott-Arruda, a three-time Olympian, has been a key veteran this summer at three international tournaments. Bown, who returned to the squad in mid-summer due to competition in the Italian Serie A championship round playoff, and Joines have starting experience this summer. Campbell seeks to make her first international roster.
Team USA lists seven outside hitters on its preliminary World Cup roster, and three have Olympic Games experience. Tayyiba Haneef-Park (Laguna Hills, Calif.), a veteran of the 2004 Olympics, has played both outside and opposite for the U.S. this season and has been a consistent scorer at both positions when healthy. Ogonna Nnamani (Normal, Ill.), a 2004 Olympian, and Katie Wilkins (Lakeside, Calif.) have played well at the position at various times this summer. Kim Glass (Lancaster, Pa.) produced well at the World Grand Prix in August during her first-ever international competition, but missed the NORCECA Continental Championship due to injury. Two-time Olympian Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, Utah) bolsters the position after returning in September from a three-year absence from the program. Therese Crawford (Kalamazoo, Mich.) recently returned to the squad as well, while Kristin Richards (Orem, Utah) has been added to the national team training in Colorado Springs after completing her collegiate career last fall at Stanford University.
Cassie Busse (Prior Lake, Minn.) has shared starting time this summer at opposite hitter. She is the only player on the U.S. roster to have competed in all four international tournaments in 2007. Katie Olsovsky (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) has participated in the Pan American Cup and NORCECA Continental Championship this season. Nancy Metcalf (Hull, Iowa), a 2004 Olympian, has yet to play a tournament in 2007 after leading the team in scoring in 17 of 28 matches in 2006 when using a senior national team.
Nicole Davis (Stockton, Calif.) has served as the starting U.S. libero at the past two tournaments, including the NORCECA Continental Championship as the U.S. finished second to qualify for the World Cup. Sykora, a two-time Olympian, has provided added depth to the libero position when she returned to the team in September after a three-year hiatus.
The U.S. Women open the 2007 FIVB World Cup on Nov. 2 against Peru at Hamamatsu, then concludes the 11-match, 15-day tournament against Italy on Nov. 16 at Nagoya.

Teams not making the World Cup medal stand will have two other opportunities to qualify for the Olympics with continental qualification tournaments in December 2007 and the World Olympic Qualification Tournament in May 2008 at Japan.
The 12-team World Cup field includes the five continental champions, the four best Continental vice-champions based on the 2007 FIVB World Ranking as of Jan. 15, 2007, host country Japan and the two wild cards as chosen by the FIVB and Japan Volleyball Association.
