A couple weeks ago a female friend on mine commented about men's volleyball. She said that women's volleyball is much more graceful and better to watch. She said that especially in the juniors level, girls are out there diving for every ball and are constantly on the floor unlike guys. Now I've never talked to anyone about comparing men's and women's volleyball but I'd like to see if any of you folks out there have had a discussion with someone about it. Does women's volleyball seem more graceful?

The differences and likes and dislikes of the men's and the women's game have been discussed here ad nauseum. A lot of people like the women's game for its long rallies and athletic and trim women in spandex. (Not kidding, I've seen that comment numerous times.) I like the women's game when the players are athletic and strong hitters. Many of the women's matches put me to sleep because as I've grown to appreciate the men's game, I've grown more and more impatient with women who aren't the very best. The men's game is more of a power game that's also quicker. If the word graceful is what some want to use to describe the women's game, my tastes think of it as slow and often boring.
Being that this is a men's board, I'd think most people here have an interest in the men's game and enjoy the power the men bring to the floor. Try asking this on the women's board and you'll surely get something like, "ya the women are graceful. The men are too quick, too powerful, and it's too much for me to process." It's all in what you've grown to appreciate, like appreciating fine wine, to me.

Females are able to dive after every ball because the ball is traveling slow enough to be dug. In the men's game even if you are in the right spot it doesn't guarantee a dig.

to see women in with strong hitting and coupled with great blocking and defence makes it enjoyable to watch. i hate watching unranked womens team battle each other. While on the otherhand the mens games are much more lively and animated...and the talking trash just makes it more appealing

Anyone that watches both men and women's ball knows that women DON'T dive...they might collapse, barrel roll, extension roll, half roll....all that crap they get taught in club and in college..... Men dive more than women because women don't have enough upper-body strength to execute the dive move correctly.
To answer the original question...women's college volleyball is slow and boring, except for a handful of elite programs. If you doubt me, go watch a match between Conference USA teams, or MWC teams, or Sunbelt Conference teams, or any of the countless other conferences that AREN'T the Pac-10, Big West, or the Big Ten.

I agree men dive and women fall over, but I don't agree with the conference comment. I'd much rather see Colorado State vs. BYU than Oregon vs. Washington State or northridge vs. fullerton. I'd agree with your comments if it stated only matches between the top teams in most conferences are worth watching. That would include pac-10, big 12, big 10, mwc, big west, etc.

There's also these things called "boobs" that make it difficult for women to execute a dive.

I enjoy aspects of both the women's and men's game. Both are very different and have their positives and negatives. A good rally in the men's side is much more exciting. You can see how hard the players are hitting the ball and to see the opposing team keep popping up the ball can really get interesting. The game is also faster and focused mainly on power.
From a tactical perspective, the women's game is a bit more interesting. Because a lot of players don't have the raw power of Cruz and Willoughby, they have to make up for it. Some players are incredibly good at tipping the ball into the right spot or hitting the ball with more spin. Women also run more complicated plays more often then the men.

I think a better question is why, after all these years of title lX, and # of players on scholarship, do the women not do substantially better than the men internationally?

I understand what you are all saying, but how many of you have actually played in a woman's game. Next time you see a woman dive, watch it more carefully, it is actually not a "fall" at all. It is a lunge, and the purpose for the roll is to transfer momentum and get up as quickly as possible. I think the men's game is fun to watch; the power is amazing, but if given the option, I think I would rather watch women's (of course, I am referring to a match between good teams). I only like women's because the rallies are longer and more plays are run. This is not to take away from the men's game, though, which I feel is also very cool.

An international level indoor men's game, played between two well-matched teams who play good defence, is about as exciting as volleyball gets. The ideal Olympic final this year to showcase the sport would be Serbia v France - both teams play terrific defence and keep some unbelievable balls alive.
On the other hand, get two men's teams who don't play defence (Russia and Netherlands spring to mind), and you're in for a pretty dull game. Points are going to be won through service errors (the occasional ace) and thumping kills and blocks only.
The high level women's game more consistently produces good rallies, and the level of power is sufficient that defensive plays are due to good digging and so are impressive. At lower levels, though, I find women's volleyball quite difficult to watch . Sure, there are plenty of digs and the rallies are long, but the reason is more often than not because the attackers just can't hit the ball hard enough to beat the defence. I just find myself thinking (and occasionally yelling) 'HIT IT!'
