FIRST HOUR
SAN SEBASTIÁN. - The intense rain and the poor record of the Caribes de San Sebastián (3-12) were more than enough to keep many spectators away. The recently inaugurated Coliseum Luis Aymat Cardona of this municipality didn't receive the expected attendance for the traditional Game of Stars of the League de Masculine Superior Volleyball (LVSM).
.
The ones that didn't leave home to come to the match lost out. It was an emotional and touching match in which the locals didn't surrender and they sweated until the last drop to win, but in the end the errors were the enemies of the Locals.
.
During the match, just about everything went wrong. During warmup, Jeff Ptak, foreign player of the Leones de Ponce, held on to the net and it broke; this delayed the start of the game for more than 20 minutes.
.
With the net problem resolved, the starting whistle blew: "Foreign players against Natives, IV Chapters."
.
The Natives, supported by a few enthusiastic fans, opened up immediately with an initial lead of 2-0. With Willie de Jesus (Playa de San Juan) as the offensive leader, they lead with 8-5 at the first technical time out. The Locals continued deploying their offensive with José Rivera's help (San Juan).
.
So much for De Jesus, as Rivera felt very comfortable with his league team partner, Ángel Aja, the starting setter for the Natives. The Foreign players began to warm up their motors and they narrowed the score to 13-11, but the Natives reacted and with a return to action of De Jesus they lead the score at the second technical time out at 16-11. But now, the statuesque figure of Iván Contreras (Gigantes de Adjuntas), took charge of the situation and with several kills gave life to the sextet of the Foreigners to narrow the score to 20-18.
.
The offensive of the Foreign players had improved since the beginning of the match and a block by José Rivera tied the score at 22-22 and then again at 23 with a kill from the Brazilian Gilmar " Kid " Texeira (Vaqueros de Bayamón).
.
But now they could sense the Foreigners closing in, because the Locals scored two points in a row to cap the score at 25-23.
.
But the Foreign players did not give up. Fearlessly, they opened the lead in the second Game 3:0. Pieter Olree (Rebeldes de Moca) and Leandro Araujo (Plataneros de Corozal) were the key players in this part of the game. The Foreign players exhibited excellent offensive action and with an offensive serve they easily dominated to the Locals with a game score of 25-19.
.
One can not lose sight of the fact that the coach of the Foreign players was the Yaucano Club’s Enrique " Quique " Ruiz who is also a member of the Men’s National Team where most of the players of the Native team participate. He is also the coach of the champion team, Changos de Naranjito. Ruiz knows his pupils very well. He knows their strengths and weaknesses and he carried out the necessary adjustments to dominate them, a task which he achieved successfully.
With two games played, bodies and furor heated up. The third was one of the more competitive games. The two teams switched the lead several times and ties were broken quickly. The Foreign players dominated until the first technical time out at 8-7. With three points in the bank they lead at the second technical time out at 16-13.
.
The local Edgardo Deniz (Rebellious of Moca) ushered in third game with a strong offense, similar to what the foreign players had done in the second game.
.
In general, the game went very well because Argentinean Carlos Daniel Cardona, the coach for San Juan and of the Locals, took advantage of the errors of the Foreigners. Victor " Vitito " Rivera’s (Changos de Narajito) excellent action helped the team to come from behind and to tie the score at 22-22. Rivera attacked again to tie the score at 23-23, but Curt Toppel (Criollos de Caguas) and Pieter Olree (Rebeldes de Moca) took charge of the remainder of the game to hand the victory to the foreign sextet, 25-23.
.
The Foreign players didn't only come to play, they also jumped, they competed and then they danced with " Voleíto ", the mascot of the FPV. Jeff Ptak and Maikael Cardona, the Foreign players of Ponce and Naranjito, respectively, took courage and came to the center of the court to dance. The fans rewarded each of them with a huge applause. The party was great, but the game had to continue.
.
The Foreign players were at 2-1 and with one more game they would win the Game of Stars 2004. The Foreign players did win the fourth game, but they had to sweat it out and it was not pretty, as they experienced the quality of the “local breed.”
.
The Foreigners, supported by Toppel (Caguas) and Ptak (Ponce) took the control of the fourth game early. The international sextet were ahead 22-21 but the Locals responded and two points later they were ahead at 23-22. Oswald " Ossie " Antonetti (Narjanjito) missed the serve to tie the score at 23. At this point, fierce competition broke out between Native and Foreign players. Point for point the game continued to 32-32 when Vitito Rivera scored his eleventh point of the night and tied the score.
.
The locals demonstrated that they have heart and that they wanted to win the game. Willie de Jesus experienced that same enthusiasm but it took one of the best Locals next to Rivera, to make two errors in a row, one missed serve and an attack error, to hand the victory to the Foreign players.
.
Toppel who plays for the first time in the LVSM, was selected the Most Valuable Player, he had scored 11 points in two games.
.
"It was a great event. None of the two coaches interfered, because we wanted all the players to participate, the show belonged to them", Ruiz, coach of the winners said.
