USA Network Will Televise First USA Men vs. Russia Match from Houston
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 10, 2004) – The first match of a three-match series between the USA men’s national volleyball team and Russia from Houston, Texas, will be televised by USA Network on a delayed basis, USA Volleyball announced Thursday.
The match, which will be played on Friday, June 25 at 7 p.m. (Central Time), will be broadcast nationally on the USA Network on Saturday, July 3, from 10-11:30 a.m. (Eastern Time).
Four-time Emmy winner Jim Watson will handle the play-by-play duties while 1996 Olympic beach volleyball silver medalist Mike Dodd will serve as the analyst for the broadcast.
The series at Houston’s Reliant Arena will serve as a pre-Olympic tune-up for the traditional world powers that have combined to win 10 Olympic medals in men’s volleyball, including five golds.
Team USA, the men’s Olympic gold medalist in 1984 and 1988 and the bronze medalist in 1992, is currently ranked No. 6 in the world. The Americans qualified for the Athens Olympic Games by winning the NORCECA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico in January.
Russia, which is currently ranked No. 5 in the world, earned Olympic gold in 1964, 1968 and 1980 to highlight its seven-medal collection. Most recently, the Russians, who qualified for Athens by winning the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Leipzig, Germany, in January, captured the silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
USA Network is the cable television home of the U.S. Olympic Team and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for the 2004, 2008, 2010, and 2012 Games. The 24 total hours of U.S. Olympic Trials coverage on USA this summer (an additional 18 hours will air on NBC, including 12 in primetime) includes 11 consecutive Saturdays from May 22-July 24 and nine hours of live weeknight broadcasts from the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials (July 9-16). The Athens Olympic Games are scheduled for Aug. 13-29.
