Kowal Named First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., June 15, 2004 - Penn State men's tennis senior Clint Keithley (Valparaiso, Ind.) and men's volleyball junior Keith Kowal (Reading, Pa.) have been named first team Academic All-Americans by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), marking Penn State's fourth and fifth CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees this year. The Nittany Lions now boast 113 total CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, including 70 awards in the last 10 years.
To qualify for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in class, a starter or significant reserve on his team and have compiled a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA. Both Keithley and Kowal were selected as first team CoSIDA Academic All-District II Men's At-Large team members on June 8, making them eligible for the national award.
Kowal, who owns a 3.65 grade point average in electrical engineering, was named a 2004 first team AVCA All-America selection after leading both the team and the nation in hitting percentage (.574). The 2004 EIVA Player of the Year also ended the season ranked first on the team with 3.83 kills per game. The junior was named the EIVA Player of the Week three times and picked up his first-ever Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week honor on March 23. He finished the 2004 campaign with 138 total blocks, good for second on the all-time single-season chart and ranks fourth on the all-time blocking chart with 333 total blocks. He recorded at least one kill in every match of the season, including 21 double-digit contests and he posted at least one block in 29 of 30 matches. Off the court, Kowal was named Academic All-East and Academic All-Big Ten in 2004.
Eligible at-large sports for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program for men include golf, rifle, volleyball, gymnastics, skiing, water polo, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, wrestling, lacrosse and tennis.
