Hoff to be Inducted into Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 16, 2002) – Long Beach State University, a school that has been very good to USA Volleyball through the years, will induct USA men’s National Team player Tom Hoff into the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 23.
Hoff, a member of the 2000 U.S. Men’s Volleyball Olympic Team, becomes the 11th USA National Team member (male or female) to be inducted into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame. The long list includes current women’s National Team members Tara Cross-Battle (inducted in 1995) and Danielle Scott (1999) and past National Team players Sharon Peterson (1986), Barbara Perry (1987), Miles Pabst (1987), Dodge Parker (1988), Brett Winslow (1997), Brent Hilliard (1998), Nichelle Burton (2000) and Sheri Sanders (2001).
After playing two years at Ohio State, Hoff transferred to Long Beach State and reached 1,000 kills in fewer matches than any other player in school history. In addition to this feat, Hoff was selected as an American Volleyball Coaches Association First-Team All-American in both his seasons as a 49er (1995-96).
In just two seasons Hoff quickly climbed the all-time kills and blocks lists. He currently ranks No. 7 on the career kill chart with 1,230 and No. 11 on the career block chart with 310. In his first season, his 751 kills were the third-best single season total in 49er history.
Hoff’s successful career has continued beyond his college days. Besides playing for the 2000 Olympic squad, in 1999 Hoff helped Team USA claim its first NORCECA Zone Championship since 1985 and was named the best middle blocker at the ninth annual Ruffini Memorial Tournament. He has been a full-time member of the men’s National Team since 1997.
Hoff will join five other individuals in the class of 2002 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Also honored with Hoff: Todd Dillon (football); Linda Lunceford Sanders (softball); Mike Montgomery (special category); Jo Redmon (fencing coach); and Francois Wise (men’s basketball).
In all, the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame boasts 154 members.
